Calgary Flames vs Chicago Blackhawks.

The vibe nearly defies description.

Oh, it?s good, make no mistake. So good, in fact, that no one dares to dissect it.

Because when a hockey team starts going, like really cooking, the last thing players want to do is break it down, get to the bottom of it.

The goal is to ride it.

Not risk it. Not disrupt it.

?Last year when we were rolling, when you came to the rink you felt that,? Matt Stajan, centre of the Calgary Flames, says of the unmistakable something that?s in the air when a team is sizzling. ?You don?t know what causes that. You get that feeling in the dressing room. I don?t think there?s anything about it that you can look at.

?You don?t question why it?s happening.?

Chris Butler compares the rush of a winning spree to a goal-scorer getting in a groove. Everything suddenly becomes so easy.

?It?s no different ? you?re getting back-door tap-ins, you?re getting empty-net looks,? says the Flames defender. ?Things just tend to come to you when you?re on those types of stretches. I don?t know if it?s an exact science. It?s the age-old (saying) ? winning cures all.?

The trick, of course, is catching that wave.

The 24-22-6 Flames have won four games consecutively only once this winter.

But Friday?s decision over the visiting Chicago Blackhawks does boost their past-10 log to 6-3-1.

?It is tremendously difficult to go on a (hot) stretch, especially at this time of year,? says Butler. ?We?ve been preaching it all season long. For whatever reason, we haven?t been able to string together the four or five games in a row that really sets you up nicely. It is challenging to roll over games in a row.?

What Stajan and Butler have in common is the experience of tremendous runs ? and, significantly, tremendous season-ending runs. Which means powering all the way to the finish line. That?s unlike last season?s Flames, who, after a jolly 22-6-6 surge, fizzled in their final dozen dates, 4-5-3.

Not so for Butler?s friends in Buffalo last winter.

The Sabres whipped through the stretch drive ? to the tune of 16-4-4. This, after a three-game losing streak that had them five points south of eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

?I?m sure there were people saying, ?This season?s a wash. These guys aren?t going to make it,? ?? says Butler. ?But what?s important is that we had a group inside the locker-room that said, ?You know what? We?re going ? to create a consistent game and give us a chance to win.? And we did. We talked about playing a playoff-style game ? guys that didn?t block shots were blocking shots, guys that typically weren?t hitting were trying to finish their checks.

?The term we used was, ?Being out of character.? Just doing something a little out of your comfort zone.?

Stajan, in 2006-07, saw his Toronto Maple Leafs roar during the last month.

The difference?

Butler?s playoff hopes were realized. And Stajan?s got toasted.

The Leafs? undoing was dramatic.

Heroically, they?d lunged into the top eight with a Game 82 triumph over the Montreal Canadiens ? that was on a Saturday. All eyes were trained on Sunday?s stage, where the New York Islanders needed to extract two points out of the New Jersey Devils.

Stajan ? glued to the tube at the condo of his then-girlfriend, now wife ? endured a hellish afternoon. From the high of the Isles allowing a game-tying goal with less than a second remaining ? ?At home watching, you?re like, ?This is fate, we?re going to the playoffs? ?? ? to the low of the Isles winning via shootout.

?We were done ? just like that,? says Stajan. ?The thing that hurt the most was putting your fate in another (team?s hands). You want to control your own destiny. We all play the same amount of games, but we kind of screwed that up ? and we needed some help.?

Out of misery come lessons.

Primarily, don?t wait till March.

To their credit, the Sabres had not dawdled and, in Game 81, needed a single point to seal a post-season berth. Deadlocked in the third period, they didn?t want to falter. The Philadelphia Flyers, also satisfied to see overtime, took a passive approach.

Which meant that Butler ? puck on his stick with 10 seconds remaining in regulation time ? had the privilege of standing, unpestered, in the neutral zone as the Buffalo crowd went bananas watching the clock tick down.

?A big thrill. It was an awesome feeling.?

Butler?s pro life hasn?t been without its devastating moments, too.

The Sabres, in the seasons previous, had lost their grip on the eighth rung, missing playoff invitations by slender margins.

?What I learned is you don?t want to be sitting around all summer saying, ?What if?? ?? says Butler. ?You have to take advantage of the now. You never know how many times you?re going to get a chance to be in the playoffs in this league.?
