I'm taking a brief hiatus from my running travelogue today to help a friend help others.

My friend Meriah?has issued a plea, one that I am more than happy to pass along.? Several months ago, she pledged to run a half-marathon to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphomia Society in honor of a little boy named Oliver and other children like him, who are fighting for their lives with cancer.? I'm not nearly as eloquent as Meriah, and am pasting here an e-mail she sent me the other day.? I hope you will all be able to help!? Please share this post, or hers, to help get the word out.

I'm running a half marathon on May 6 up on Humboldt County for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

I know that you didn't ask me to do this. That the impetus for deciding to do it is mine, all mine. That others shouldn't have to feel that they *need* to donate to this cause, because, after all, it's a cause that I chose, not you, right?

Only it's not really.

Because you know someone that has died of cancer - and if you don't, then I can guarantee you that in your life span, you will. Chances are high that it will be someone you love. It might even be yourself.

Cancer is everywhere. We don't know how it gets started, we don't know how to make it go away for good. We won't know these things either, unless and until we step up with the research and unfortunately, researchers neither work for free nor does the government provide adequate funds in this area.

Lennar Atlanta Hosts Benefit for Green Pets America - Kennesaw ...

Lennar Atlanta is excited to announce a Wexford community event benefiting the?Green Pets America Humane Society?Saturday?and Sunday, March 31 and April 1 at the Wexford Community sales center in Marietta.

Five Favorite Films with Lily Collins

Lily Collins was born into fame -- her dad, Phil, could bang a drum and write a hit tune or two -- but she found her own way into an acting career, performing in stage productions as a kid before working as a teenage Hollywood reporter and scoring small roles in movies like The Blind Side. This week she steps into the limelight as the star of Mirror Mirror, director Tarsem's visually energetic remix of the Snow White fairytale -- the first, and likely funniest, of this year's adaptations of the classic story. As the fairest of them all, Collins dazzles in the late, great Eiko Ishioka's exquisite costumes, while getting to put Julia Roberts' evil queen in her place and sharing her first kiss with Prince Winkelvoss, er, Charming, played with a degree of good sportsmanship by Armie Hammer.

We sat down with the English-born Collins recently in her adopted home of Los Angeles, where she talked about the movie, working with Tarsem and her thoughts on Kristen Stewart's not-really-a-rival take on Snow. First up, she talked us through her five favorite films.

These are so raw -- this is who I am, these movies. [Laughs] They're very girly. In no particular order... Love Actually. Most of these movies have British accents in them, because, being from England, there's something about films that I watch that have a British accent that I just feel so at home with. That film I can watch any day and it makes me smile; and I love Christmas, so it kind of matches perfectly.

Pride and Prejudice. I love sweeping British drama period pieces and I hope that one day I can do one just like that, because, to me, I love old English literature. And I'm a big Keira Knightley fan. It's just so beautiful aesthetically and in terms of story.

Harry Potter series

That's cheating. Do you have a particular favorite?

Is it cheating? [Laughs] It's hard to pick. I wouldn't necessarily know which. I mean, I love the Goblet of Fire. I don't know. Maybe the Goblet of Fire. I read those books so quickly when I was a kid, because that whole world was so, like... it took me out of my reality. And I just love magic and I loved that whole world, the creatures, and just how you felt so friendly with all the characters. The way they translated that into movies, I thought was genius. You know when they take a book, and they make it a movie, and you hope that it's gonna be everything that you hope for and more? To me they just succeeded. I don't know, I just love them so much. Every time I'm sick I'll watch a marathon of them and I can repeat all the words.

Hopefully you're sick for a while... I mean, so you can watch them all.

[Laughs] I know, they're so long. I just had laryngitis, so...

Breakfast Club. I was actually having trouble because I would say Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles and Breakfast Club, but that would be three. Of all three, Breakfast Club is my favorite. But those John Hughes films, with Molly Ringwald and the Brat Pack, those are my favorite grouped films. They're just so... they're timeless. I feel like, even when you're watching them now, they're so modern, and the characters are so real. They're just so appealing to me. I watched them with my mom when I was really young. I always would watch things with my mom that maybe other moms wouldn't allow their kids to watch. I associated with them right away. I just really, really love John Hughes.

Who's your favorite character in the movie?

I love Molly Ringwald. But I also love the basket case, Ally Sheedy -- you know, with the pixie sticks and the crunching of the sandwich. She's so fantastic.

Sabrina, with Audrey Hepburn. I actually spent my New Year's this year watching Sabrina, and as it turned midnight I paused it and it was just her face on screen, smiling. I was like, "What a cool way to start the New Year." She is just someone I've always admired. She says so much without saying anything at all. And back then they didn't do such fast cuts in films; they stayed on a character's face long enough for them to go from one emotion to another, and for the audience to really feel the emotion with each character -- and she in that movie just goes from so many endearing moments to moments of sadness and laughter. It's just such a classic, and I love black and white. So, that's my list!

Kevin: Good evening, everyone. So Craig, you?ve been in the fitness industry for over 26 years and with that, I imagine comes a bit of wisdom. Why don?t you start with your story and how you?ve gotten to where you are now?

Craig: Sure Kevin. Well, first of all, I started out in the fitness industry as a personal trainer making $3.50 an hour.

Craig: So I?ve been in it for awhile and I grew through the ranks in the fitness industry to the executive level. I was the president of two of the largest fitness organizations in the United States. I was the Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the largest chain of fitness clubs in the world operating in 11 countries. I also successfully owned and operated my own fitness company. I?ve visited 30 countries and evaluated health and fitness trends all over Russia, Asia, Europe. I?ve been to dozens of fitness conventions, purchased millions of dollars worth of equipment, supplements and other health and fitness related products and I?ve also had the ability to train thousands of health and fitness professionals around the world and help them to help other people improve their lives. There?s big profit in sickness and in fatness, and a lot of times people question that and they think, ?Oh, well we live in the United States, we?re in great health and we have the best health care system? which is a complete fallacy. Here?s an interesting fact that people should be aware of, we?re approaching some 300 million people in the U.S. and we have every year 200 million diseases that are diagnosed for conditions that could be prevented with simple lifestyle changes.

Kevin: Wow.

Craig: And we spend in the United States, 270 billion dollars on 3.7 billion prescriptions written to, not to cure anything because there?s really very few cures in modern medicine, medicine is meant mostly to mask our symptoms. So taking into our bodies a lot of toxic chemicals and you know there?s so much confusion out there and misinformation about health and fitness. So there?s a huge opportunity, unfortunately, for people to make big money on the lack of knowledge that people have about how to lose weight, improve their health, get in shape and live better. Kevin: And let me just ask you this, you?ve been on the other side, you?ve been a part of the industry that is making a lot of money in the fitness clubs and the organizations and everything. When did you suddenly say, ?Hey, you know, maybe I need to educate people about this.?

Craig: Well, first of all I never felt that the club industry was a bad industry.

Kevin: Okay.

Craig: And in my book I still am a big proponent of joining a fitness center for the average person, there are, of course, some caveat of how to get a quality club. I have an article on the ten worst tricks for the fitness industry. So I try to expose the things that I think are bad but there?s also a lot of good too, but what I did notice while I was operating all of these clubs and trying to help people is that I would talk to thousands of consumers, face to face. For a big part of my career, my job was to get out there and help, work with people in the field, club operators, managers, sales people, fitness staff members, personal trainers, to talk to them about how to help people make decisions that are good for them and the guiding principle, of course was always don?t focus on making money, focus on helping people and you will make money as a natural result, as a natural bi-produce of helping people. That?s always been one of my guiding principles, but in speaking with all these consumers, you find that the average person spends thousands and thousands of dollars on products and services that have no chance of helping them. They spend hours and hours of wasted time on information that will never help them improve their health or change their lives. So I got tired, frustrated and really kind of outraged at all of the quick fix solutions that are out there that people jump from one to the other and without really understanding the true cause of why they?re in such poor health. So I wanted to try to educate them on all of the things, the lies the deceptions while also trying to give them simple solutions for how to improve their health, how to lose weight, how to get in shape, how to live better, how to feel better with no tricks and no gimmicks for the rest of their lives. That?s really what the big fat health and fitness lie is all about and that?s really what the Fit Advocate website is all about.

Kevin: And you take a different approach in your book as opposed to a lot of the other books that I?ve read about health and fitness and it?s related to addiction. You say addiction feeds this whole lie. What do you mean by this?

Craig: Well, many people live a self-inflicted toxic lifestyle that destroys their health and feeds this lie. So what do I mean by that? Well, the definition of toxic, first of all, is poison and in our society we are surrounded by poisons, in our air, it?s in our water, some of them we can?t avoid and many of them we can, however. A lot of these poisons, they?re not going to kill us today, but instead what they do is they slowly and quietly deteriorate and destroy our health.

DENVER (AP) ? Angeline Chilton says she can't drive unless she smokes pot. The suburban Denver woman says she'd never get behind the wheel right after smoking, but she does use medical marijuana twice a day to ease tremors caused by multiple sclerosis that previously left her homebound.

"I don't drink and drive, and I don't smoke and drive," she said. "But my body is completely saturated with THC."

Her case underscores a problem that no one's sure how to solve: How do you tell if someone is too stoned to drive?

States that allow medical marijuana have grappled with determining impairment levels for years. And voters in Colorado and Washington state will decide this fall whether to legalize the drug for recreational use, bringing a new urgency to the issue.

A Denver marijuana advocate says officials are scrambling for limits in part because more drivers acknowledge using the drug.

"The explosion of medical marijuana patients has led to a lot of drivers sticking the (marijuana) card in law enforcement's face, saying, 'You can't do anything to me, I'm legal,'" said Sean McAllister, a lawyer who defends people charged with driving under the influence of marijuana.

It's not that simple. Driving while impaired by any drug is illegal in all states.

But it highlights the challenges law enforcement officers face using old tools to try to fix a new problem. Most convictions for drugged driving now are based on police observations, followed later by a blood test.

Authorities envision a legal threshold for pot that would be comparable to the blood-alcohol standard used to determine drunken driving.

But unlike alcohol, marijuana stays in the blood long after the high wears off a few hours after use, and there is no quick test to determine someone's level of impairment ? not that scientists haven't been working on it.

Dr. Marilyn Huestis of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, a government research lab, says that soon there will be a saliva test to detect recent marijuana use.

But government officials say that doesn't address the question of impairment.

"I'll be dead ? and so will lots of other people ? from old age, before we know the impairment levels" for marijuana and other drugs, said White House drug czar Gil Kerlikowske.

Authorities recognize the need for a solution. Marijuana causes dizziness, slowed reaction time and drivers are more likely to drift and swerve while they're high.

Dr. Bob DuPont, president of the Institute for Behavior and Health, a non-government institute that works to reduce drug abuse, says research proves "the terrible carnage out there on the roads caused by marijuana."

One recent review of several studies of pot smoking and car accidents suggested that driving after smoking marijuana might almost double the risk of being in a serious or fatal crash.

And a recent nationwide census of fatal traffic accidents showed that while deadly crashes have declined in recent years, the percentage of mortally wounded drivers who later tested positive for drugs rose 18 percent between 2005 and 2011.

DuPont, drug czar for Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, wrote a paper last year on drugged driving for the Obama administration, which has made the issue a priority.

Physicians say that while many tests can show whether someone has recently used pot, it's more difficult to pinpoint impairment at any certain time.

Urine and blood tests are better at showing whether someone used the drug in the past ? which is why employers and probation officers use them. But determining current impairment is far trickier.

"There's no sure answer to that question," said Dr. Guohua Li, a Columbia University researcher who reviewed marijuana use and motor vehicle crashes last year.

His survey linked pot use to crash risk, but pointed out wide research gaps. Scientists do not have conclusive data to link marijuana dosing to accident likelihood; whether it matters if the drug is smoked or eaten; or how pot interacts with other drugs.

The limited data has prompted a furious debate.

Proposed solutions include setting limits on the amount of the main psychoactive chemical in marijuana, THC, that drivers can have in their blood. But THC limits to determine impairment are not widely agreed upon.

Two states place the standard at 2 nanograms per milliliter of blood. Others have zero tolerance policies. And Colorado and Washington state are debating a threshold of 5 nanograms.

Such an attempt failed the Colorado Legislature last year, amid opposition from Republicans and Democrats. State officials then set up a task force to settle the question ? and the panel couldn't agree.

This year, Colorado lawmakers are debating a similar measure, but its sponsors concede they don't know whether the "driving while high" bill will pass.

In Washington state, the ballot measure on marijuana legalization includes a 5 nanogram THC limit.

The measure's backers say polling indicates such a driving limit could be crucial to winning public support for legalization.

"Voters were very concerned about impaired driving," said Alison Holcomb, campaign director for Washington's legalization measure.

Holcomb also pointed to a failed marijuana legalization proposal in California two years ago that did not include a driving THC limit.

The White House, which has a goal of reducing drugged driving by 10 percent in the next three years, wants states to set a blood-level standard upon which to base convictions, but has not said what that limit should be.

Administration officials insist marijuana should remain illegal, and Kerlikowske called it a "bogus argument" to say any legal level of THC in a driver is safe.

But several factors can skew THC blood tests, including age, gender, weight and frequency of marijuana use. Also, THC can remain in the system weeks after a user sobers up, leading to the anxiety shared by many in the 16 medical marijuana states: They could be at risk for a positive test at any time, whether they had recently used the drug or not.

A Colorado state forensic toxicologist testified recently that "5 nanograms is more than fair" to determine intoxication. But, for now the blood test proposals remain politically fraught, with supporters and opponents of marijuana legalization hinging support on the issue.

Huestis, of the government-funded drug abuse institute, says an easy-to-use roadside saliva test that can determine recent marijuana use ? as opposed to long-ago pot use ? is in final testing stages and will be ready for police use soon.

Researchers envision a day when marijuana tests are as common in police cars as Breathalyzers.

Until then, lawmakers will consider measures such as Colorado's marijuana DUI proposal, which marijuana activists say imperils drivers who frequently use the drug such as Chilton, the multiple sclerosis patient.

She says that since she began using pot she has started driving again and for the first time in five years has landed a job.

Chilton worries Colorado's proposal jeopardizes her newfound freedom.
