How Can Commercial Cleaning Help Your Business?

Every business has to maintain a clean work environment. Whether you run a customer service business with high customer traffic or an office building full of employees, you must maintain certain cleanliness standards. Doing this is often burdensome in a number of ways, but it does not need to be that way. A quality commercial cleaning service can ease the burden of the business owner in several ways.

Cost Efficiency

Commercial cleaning services are excellent money savers for a small business. In the long run, it is often far cheaper to hire a service to clean your business than it is to hire a full time janitor to do the same job. This is because a janitor will require a full time salary with benefits, sick days, and vacation. Additionally, you will be responsible for buying cleaning supplies and finding space to store them. On the other hand, a service will use their own supplies will clean your entire building in a matter of hours. Thus, you?ll be paying less to have the same job done.

Time Saving

In addition to saving you money, a commercial cleaning company will save you time. Instead of making cleaning tasks part of your employees? job descriptions and having them spend valuable time on these tedious jobs, you will be able to have them devote all of their time to the tasks that make your business what it is. Additionally, a professional cleaner will require no oversight at all and will free up all of your time to devote to other matters.

Increased Productivity

Finally, a commercial cleaning operation will help to increase your business?s productivity. Any time that someone has a clean and comfortable environment to work in it is more likely that they will be happy with what they are doing. It is common knowledge that a happy employee is a more productive employee. So, a good professional cleaner will go a long way in making you and your employees enjoy your work environment, and this will, in turn, make everyone more likely to work harder and happier.

Thus, there are a variety of benefits that come from hiring a commercial cleaning company for your small business. These services can quickly save you money and time. Moreover, they can give you and your employees a more pleasant and enjoyable work experience, and you will quickly see the benefits of all of these things as the burden of finding a way to keep your business clean is lifted from your shoulders.

How to unlock the Nexus 7 bootloader

Google Nexus 7

This should really go without saying, given that it's called the ?Nexus? 7, but we'll go ahead and say it anyway. Yes, you can unlock the Nexus 7 bootloader, then have your way with it however you deem fit.

Unlocking the Nexus 7 is the same as any other Nexus device. You'll need to put it into USB debugging mode, have the Android SDK installed on your computer, and then use the ?fastboot oem unlock? command. (Relocking is just as easy, too.)

So, no worries on that front.

Also: See our hands-on with the Nexus 7

(AP) ? Among the injustices about the death of Nora Ephron is that she isn't around to tell us about it.

"She was so, so alive," says her friend Carrie Fisher. "It makes no sense to me that she isn't alive anymore."

Ephron, the essayist, author and filmmaker who challenged and thrived in the male-dominated worlds of movies and journalism and was loved, respected and feared for her devastating and diverting wit, died Tuesday in Manhattan. She was 71.

Ephron died at 7:40 p.m. at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, her family said in a statement Tuesday night. She died of leukemia.

Born into a family of screenwriters, a top journalist in her 20s and 30s, then a best-selling author and successful director, Ephron was among the most quotable and influential writers of her generation. She wrote and directed such favorites as "Julie & Julia" and "Sleepless in Seattle," and her books included the novel "Heartburn," a knockout roman a clef about her marriage to Washington Post reporter Carl Bernstein; and the popular essay collections "I Feel Bad About My Neck" and "I Remember Nothing."

She was tough on others ? Bernstein's marital transgressions were immortalized by the horndog spouse in "Heartburn," a man "capable of having sex with a Venetian blind" ? and relentless about herself. She wrote openly about her difficult childhood, her failed relationships, her doubts about her physical appearance and the hated intrusion of age.

"We all look good for our age. Except for our necks," she wrote in the title piece from "I Feel Bad About My Neck," published in 2006. "Oh, the necks. There are chicken necks. There are turkey gobbler necks. There are elephant necks. There are necks with wattles and necks with creases that are on the verge of becoming wattles. ... According to my dermatologist, the neck starts to go at 43 and that's that."

Even within the smart-talking axis of New York-Washington-Los Angeles, no one bettered Ephron, slender and dark-haired, her bright and pointed smile like a one-liner made flesh. Friends from Mike Nichols and Meryl Streep to Calvin Trillin and Pete Hamill adored her for her wisdom, her loyalty and turns of phrase.

As a screenwriter, Ephron was nominated three times for Academy Awards, for "Silkwood," ''When Harry Met Sally ..." and "Sleepless in Seattle," and was the rare woman to write, direct and produce Hollywood movies. Fisher and Meg Ryan were among the many actresses who said they loved working with Ephron because she understood them so much better than did her male peers.

"I suppose you could say Nora was my ideal," Fisher said. "In a world where we're told that you can't have it all, Nora consistently proved that adage wrong. A writer, director, wife, mother, chef, wit ? there didn't seem to be anything she couldn't do. And not just do it, but excel at it, revolutionize it, set the bar for every other screenwriter, novelist, director."

"Nora Ephron was a journalist-artist who knew what was important to know; how things really worked, what was worthwhile, who was fascinating and why," said "Sleepless in Seattle" star Tom Hanks. "At a dinner table and on a film set she lifted us all with wisdom and wit mixed with love for us and love for life."

The eldest of four children, Ephron was born in New York to screenwriters Harry and Phoebe Ephron, who moved to Beverly Hills, Calif., when she was 4 years old. Words, words, words were the air she breathed. Regular visitors included "Casablanca" co-writer Julius J. Epstein, "Sunset Boulevard" collaborator Charles Brackett, and the team of Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich, who worked on "The Thin Man" and "It's a Wonderful Life."

Everyone was in movies, "the business."

"People who were not in the business were known as civilians," Ephron wrote in "I Remember Nothing."

If the best humor is born out of sadness, then Ephron was destined for comedy. She was 15, she recalled, when her mother became an alcoholic, finishing off a bottle of scotch a night. Her father, too, was a heavy drinker, "sloppy, sentimental," although "somehow his alcoholism was more benign."

Determined by high school to be a journalist, Ephron graduated from the single-sex Wellesley College in 1962, moved to New York and started out as a "mail girl" and fact checker at Newsweek. A newspaper strike at the end of the year gave her a chance. Victor Navasky, the future editor of The Nation, was then running a satirical magazine called the Monacle. He was working on a parody of the New York Post, "The New York Pest," and asked Ephron for a spoof of Post columnist Leonard Lyons.

She succeeded so well that the newspaper's publisher, Dorothy Schiff, reasoned that anyone who could make fun of the Post could also write for it. Ephron was asked to try out as a reporter. Within a week, she had a permanent job and remained there five years. The Post, she later wrote, was a "terrible paper," and she envied her peers at The New York Times and elsewhere who had more time to work on stories and had better access to people they wanted to interview.

"But the point is this. I was better off ..." she wrote in the introduction to the essay collection "Wallflower at the Orgy, published in 1970. "I learned to go through the clips, find the names of people from the subject's past, hunt them up in old telephone books, track them down, and pull out anecdotes they knew. What I'm saying may seem obvious; but one of the things that stuns me is how seldom reporters do this."

Ephron began writing for Esquire and The New York Times and developed a national following as a throwback to the prime of Dorothy Parker and S.J. Perelman and a worthy peer of such new and hip journalists as Gay Talese and Tom Wolfe. She covered political conventions, the feminist movement and Wellesley, which she labeled a factory for "docile" women. Part of her gift was her fresh takes on such traditional subjects for women as food and fashion, like in the essay "The Food Establishment: Life in the Land of the Rising Souffle (Or Is It the Rising Meringue?)"

"The typical member of the Food Establishment," she wrote, "is given to telling you, apropos of nothing, how many souffles he has been known to make in a short period of time. ... He gossips a good deal about his colleagues, about what they are cooking, writing, and eating; and whom they are talking to, about everything, in fact, except the one thing everyone else in the universe gossips about ? who is sleeping with whom."

By the 1970s, she had met Bernstein, who teamed with fellow Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward on prize-winning coverage of the Watergate scandal that brought down President Nixon. They married in 1976, and had two children, but love soon turned to hate ? and matured into art. Ephron was pregnant with their second child when she learned Bernstein was having an affair, a betrayal that had its rewards, once she stopped crying.

She wrote "Heartburn," later a film starring Streep and Jack Nicholson and directed by Nichols, with whom she collaborated often. The book was so close to her life that Bernstein threatened to sue. Decades later, the memory of the book's birth was easily summoned.

"Yes, totally, completely, absolutely, sitting at the legendary and long-gone Smith Corona electric typewriter that I once had," she told The Associated Press in 2010. "I was working on a screenplay and wrote the first 10 pages of a novel, and I knew the title, knew there were going to be recipes in it. This I remember, exactly where I was, working and knowing, 'Oh, I see, enough time has passed that I'm ready to do this.'"

Another perk from her time with Bernstein: She sussed out that "Deep Throat," the unnamed and unknown Watergate source, was in fact FBI official Mark Felt. She would allege that she told countless people about Felt, who did not acknowledge his role until years later.

Her screenwriting credits included "Heartburn," the nuclear power drama "Silkwood" and the romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally ..." She twice directed the team of Ryan and Hanks, in "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail," and also worked with John Travolta (in the fantasy "Michael"), Steve Martin ("Mixed Nuts") and Nicole Kidman ("Bewitched").

Ephron had a great nose for nonsense, but was enough a citizen of Hollywood to fall, and fall hard, for a happy ending. "Sleepless in Seattle," in which Ryan and Hanks play long-distance admirers who meet at film's end, was not only a remake of the weeper "An Affair to Remember," but a tribute to how movies might tell us how to live. Ryan and her best pal, played by Rosie O'Donnell, are seen watching "Affair to Remember," which inspires Ryan to suggest to Hanks that they meet ? like Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr ? on top of the Empire State Building, on Valentine's Day.

"That's a chicks' movie," Hanks' character says when he learns about the film's plot.

Ephron was married three times: to Dan Greenburg, Bernstein and, quite happily, to "Wiseguy" author Nicholas Pileggi, whose book was adapted into the Martin Scorsese film "Goodfellas." Sisters Delia, Amy and Hallie Ephron also are writers and Nora and Delia collaborated on such films as "This Is My Life" and "Sleepless in Seattle."

In her essay "The O Word," Nora Ephron anticipated growing too old to make jokes about her age. She would be "really old," beyond sex in a hotel room, or even a frozen custard at Shake Shack. It would be nice if she believed in a higher being, but the phrase "everything happens for a reason" is a sermon that only annoys her.

Ephron wrote of summers in the Hamptons on Long Island when her children were little, of fireworks on the Fourth of July and picnics on the beach. She loved the sound of geese in mid-July ? "one of the things that made the summers out there so magical." As she aged, the geese reminded her that summer will end, and so will everything else.

"I especially began to hate their sound, which was not beating wings ? how could I have ever thought it was? ? but a lot of uneuphonious honks," she writes. "Now we don't go to Long Island in the summer and I don't hear the geese. Sometimes, instead, we go to Los Angeles, where there are hummingbirds, and I love to watch them because they're so busy getting the most out of life."

Starr Family Blog: A Baby Shower :: The Food

What?s more fun than party food?

Sweet, savory, bite size, or decadent, anything goes!? For this baby shower, we wanted to cater to the Mama of the hour, indulging in delicious treats? and everyone knows she should be eating for two!

{Go HERE for a full photo recap and HERE for party details}

The Sweet

#1. Cupcakes

In every size and color, we kept it varied and over-the-top!? Flavors ranged from the chocolate-y to lemon, and everything in between.? Guests love to pick their favorites, and there was something for everyone.? I?m not sure what was better, the frosting or the fillings inside!? Variety is unique, completely not expected.? All ordered locally from The Faithful Little Cupcake.

#2. Donut Holes

A morning brunch isn?t complete without a bite of sweetened dough.? Glazed or powered, a perfect sized morsel.? Ordered locally at Michaels Bakery.

#3.? Lemonberry Trifle

Not at all stuffy, just pretty enough for a shower brunch.? This recipe can be made the night before for one less thing to do in the morning.? If you run out of lemon curd? lemon pie filling can be added to fill & tame flavor.

(I added raspberries & used Riesling instead of sherry)

#4. Fresh Fruit and Homemade Dip

More of a natural sweetener, the fruit added color and a healthier option to the table.? A simple cream fruit dip was the compliment.?

The Savory

#1. Asparagus Prosciutto

I?d love to admit there were no selfish motives behind this appetizer? but I digress.? I have a weakness for baby asparagus, and this recipe was delicious.

Recipe

3-4 bunches baby asparagus

12 oz. prosciutto, sliced lengthwise

1 tub Boursin cheese spread, any flavor

Heat oven to 400 degrees.? Chop 3/4? of stem off asparagus, spread on a baking pan.? Cover in olive oil, kosher salt, black pepper.? Bake for 15 minutes.? Gather 4-5 asparagus, add a dab of cheese, wrap in prosciutto.

#2.? Sausage Pineapple Skewers

I?m ashamed at how easy these were to make (also ashamed that is was my dear friend that assembled them, not me! Thanks A!)? A very simple not-quite-a-recipe-recipe for any shower/function.

Recipe

1 bag frozen meatballs (don't judge!), or homemade

1 fresh pineapple, skin removed/diced

BBQ Sauce, Teriyaki Sauce, & Brown Sugar (I prefer Sweet Baby Rays BBQ & Newman's Own Teriyaki)

Skewers, or Lollipop Sticks

Combine meatballs, BBQ sauce, Teriyaki sauce, and brown sugar (use equal amounts, or taste preference).? Slow cook meatballs for 3-4 hours on high.? Skewer meatballs and diced pineapple.

Beverage Station

Party food deserves party drinks.? And plenty of them.

A little nod to the expecting mother, we offered Cr?me Soda, and then served other typical shower beverages with a twist.

Lemonade, bottled with slices

Vintage Soda pop & Fizze carbonated beverages

Cucumber Water with slices

Coffee Punch (coffee, sugar, ice cream)

And that?s a party!

As exciting as it is, to prepare, shower, and unwrap? there is nothing like expecting a sweet baby and meeting them for the first time!? I simply cannot wait to see this little person, and make certain Aunt K is their very favoritest ever.

Tropical Storm Debby threatens Louisiana, Texas

MIAMI (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Debby formed in the central Gulf of Mexico on Saturday and was expected to strengthen into a hurricane as it skirted the Louisiana coast and took aim at Texas, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Debby covered much of the eastern Gulf and was centered about 215 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. The storm had top winds of 50 miles per hour (81 km per hour) and was expected to strengthen into a hurricane by Tuesday night.

The storm was nearly stationary but was forecast to start drifting north by Monday and then turn west, grazing the Louisiana coast through Tuesday and slamming into Texas late in the week.

Oil and gas producers evacuated workers from oil and gas platforms and shut in production on Saturday as the weather worsened in the Gulf of Mexico, which is home to 20 percent of U.S. oil production and 6 percent of natural gas output.

The U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, which oversees oil and gas activity in the Gulf, said earlier on Saturday that 7.8 percent of daily oil output and 8.16 percent of daily natural gas output were shut down.

The agency's next update will be released at midday on Sunday.

A tropical storm warning was issued for the Louisiana coast from the Pearl River west to Morgan City, excluding the city of New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain. Residents were warned to expect storm conditions within 36 hours.

"Tropical storm conditions are expected to first reach the coast within the warning area by Sunday night, making outside preparations difficult or dangerous," the forecasters warned.

The combination of storm surge and high tide could cause flooding in normally dry areas near the Louisiana coast, they said.

Debby could bring 3 to 6 inches of rain to the Gulf Coast from southern Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle, with up to 10 inches of rain in isolated areas.

The heaviest squalls were hitting Florida's Gulf Coast, where there were unconfirmed reports that a tornado had touched down on Saturday. Several Alabama beaches were closed due to rough surf.

Forecasting models still diverged on the storm's potential path. Most swung it west toward Texas or Louisiana, but a few still took it east toward Florida.

Lonesome George Dead: Last-Of-His-Kind Galapagos Tortoise Dies At 100

* Giant tortoise, 100 years old, was a symbol of the Galapagos
* Galapagos park may decide to embalm his body
By Alexandra Valencia and Eduardo Garcia
QUITO, June 24 (Reuters) - Lonesome George, the last remaining tortoise of his kind and a conservation icon, died on Sunday of unknown causes, the Galapagos National Park said. He was thought to be about 100 years old.
Lonesome George was found in 1972 and had become a symbol of Ecuador's Galapagos Islands, which attracted some 180,000 visitors last year.
"This morning the park ranger in charge of looking after the tortoises found Lonesome George, his body was motionless," the head of the Galapagos National Park, Edwin Naula, told Reuters. "His life cycle came to an end."
George was believed to be around 100 years old and the last member of a species of giant tortoise from La Pinta, one of the smallest islands in the Galapagos, the Galapagos National Park said.
The giant Galapagos tortoises, which can live up to 200 years old, were among the species that helped Charles Darwin formulate his theory of evolution in the 19th century.
The Galapagos National Park is considering embalming George's body so that it can be displayed in the park, Naula said.
A spokesperson said the park plans to carry out a necropsy to determine what may have killed the tortoise.
Scientists had been trying to get George to mate since 1993, when they introduced two female tortoises of a different subspecies into his pen. They laid eggs twice, but they were infertile.
The pen where George lived was visited by thousands of tourists every year, who often had to scramble with each other to take pictures of one of the rarest creatures on Earth.
The islands often attract celebrities, including Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt earlier this year.
Tortoises were hunted for their meat by sailors and fishermen to the point of extinction, while their habitat has been eaten away by goats introduced from the mainland.
Some 20,000 giant tortoises still live on the Galapagos. (Editing by Sandra Maler)

College World Series: Gamecocks Erase Deficit Against Razorbacks, Advance To Final Series

OMAHA, Neb. ? The Arkansas bullpen's streak of scoreless innings ended at precisely the wrong time and cost the Razorbacks a spot in the College World Series finals.

Reliever Barrett Astin walked Adam Matthews with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, producing South Carolina's go-ahead run in a 3-2 victory Friday night and ended the streak at 26 innings.

The Gamecocks (49-18) will play Arizona in the best-of-three finals starting Sunday looking to win their third straight national championship.

Arkansas had won seven straight games decided by one run.

"South Carolina did a great job of manufacturing a run there late to win the game," Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said. "I just feel bad for our players. They fought hard."

Tyler Webb and Matt Price combined for seven innings of shutout relief for the Gamecocks, who are trying to become the first team to win three titles in a row since Southern California won five straight from 1970-74.

The Gamecocks beat Arkansas twice in three CWS meetings over five days after winning two of three against the Razorbacks during the Southeastern Conference regular season.

Arkansas had ended South Carolina's record 22-game win streak in the NCAA tournament with a 2-1 win on Monday. The Gamecocks forced a second bracket championship game with their 2-0 win on Thursday.

"I knew it was going to be tight and it didn't surprise me it ended up being a one-run game," Van Horn said. "Hats off to the pitchers, I thought they did a great job. I thought they filled up the zone all night long."

The Gamecocks erased a 2-0 deficit in the fifth, with Arkansas starter DJ Baxendale walking Christian Walker with the bases loaded to force in the tying run. Baxendale had a career-high five walks.

Matthews looked ready to swing on a 3-2 pitch from Astin in the seventh, but he held up as the slider dropped low and Joey Pankake trotted home for the go-ahead run.

It was the ninth walk issued by the Razorbacks.

Colby Suggs (7-1) took the loss for Arkansas (46-22).

Webb, who relieved Colby Holmes after the Hogs' first two batters reached in the third, allowed two hits in four innings.

Price (5-4), who gave up one hit and struck out five, pitched three innings to earn his record fifth career win in the CWS. Of his 48 pitches, 37 were strikes.

"Any time you get to the College World Series it helps your program," Van Horn said. "It's definitely going to help the confidence of the players in your program. Hopefully it helps build support among your fan base, and our fan base has been incredible."

Matt Reynolds drove in a run in the first inning to end a 0-for-15 slump. Reynolds had not had a hit since the fourth inning of the June 10 game against Baylor. It was the longest hitless drought of Reynolds' career. He drove in the Hogs' other run with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

"Going to the College World Series has always been a dream of mine," Reynolds said. "We knew we had the team to do it this year. We went through a struggle midseason but we never gave up and we kept fighting, and I think we really jelled as a team early in the postseason. It's a bad feeling that it came to an end like this."

(AP) ? Greece's new prime minister will not be well enough to travel to a critical EU summit in Brussels after undergoing an eye operation, the government said Sunday.

Antonis Samaras, 61, underwent surgery for a detached retina for nearly four hours Saturday, just three days after being sworn in at the head of a three-party coalition government formed after two inconclusive general elections.

The doctor treating the prime minister, Panagiotis Theodosiadis, has ruled out him being able to travel to Brussels for the June 28-29 European Union summit, government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said.

"Before the surgery, (Samaras) said, 'You do your job, and I do mine, which is to go to the EU summit,'" Theodosiadis said of Samaras. 'I was hoping (Saturday) that he would announce he would not go because it was a very delicate operation. ... He needs to lie at a certain angle for a certain period each day, for at least a week. He can do meetings, but he certainly can't walk," Theodosiadis said, adding that his patient would leave the hospital Monday.

Samaras has appointed new Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos to head the Greek delegation at the meeting, Kedikoglou said.

The summit could prove a key test of Greek leaders' pledges to renegotiate some terms of the country's international bailout.

Reports that the so-called troika of Greece's lenders ? the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund ? will postpone the visit of its delegation, originally planned for Monday, were not confirmed by Samaras' office. European Commission spokesman Amadeu Altafaj Tardio said that troika staff "will be moving to Athens starting (Monday)."

The debt inspectors are due to review the country's fiscal situation and resume talks that had been put on hold during the country's nearly two-month political deadlock.

Greece's incoming finance minister, Vassilis Rapanos, was also hospitalized Friday after suffering a collapse. A hospital spokeswoman said he was expected to be discharged either late Monday or Tuesday after further tests. But because his swearing in had to be postponed due to his ill-health, outgoing Finance Minister Giorgos Zanias still holds the title and will attend the summit.

Zanias, who was a key negotiator for Greece's bailout deal before being named to the post, will be accompanied by Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis and Alternative Finance Minister Christos Staikouras.

Zanias himself had suffered chest pains and high blood pressure and was hospitalized in October at an EU summit, where he had accompanied then-Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos. The doctors had said he had suffered an anxiety attack. Four days later, an adviser to then-Prime Minister George Papandreou suffered a heart attack during negotiations on Greece's second bailout deal.

Greece has been dependent since May 2010 on funds from two international rescue loan deals with other European Union countries and the International Monetary Fund, in return for which it imposed a series of deep spending cuts and tax hikes.

Anti-bailout parties made massive gains in Greece's May 6 and June 17 elections, with Greeks furious at the drop in living standards by measures that have left the country struggling through a fifth year of recession and sent unemployment spiraling to above 22 percent.

Samaras' conservative New Democracy party came first in both elections, but without enough votes to govern alone. Coalition talks collapsed after 10 days in May, leading to the second ballot.

New Democracy is now in a power-sharing government with longtime socialist PASOK rivals and the small Democratic Left.

The new government on Saturday issued a policy statement outlining what it aims to change in its bailout conditions, saying it would seek to repeal some taxes, halt layoffs and extend by two years the mid-2014 deadline for tough austerity measures.

"The general aim is no more cuts to salaries and pensions, no more taxes," the statement said, adding the government would not carry out any public sector layoffs.

Whether the government can deliver on its pledges will depend on how they are viewed by Greece's international creditors. Germany, the largest single contributor to the bailout, has repeatedly said Athens must stick to its austerity targets.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble repeated this view Sunday, in an interview to newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

"It must now be the most important task of Prime Minister Samaras' new government to swiftly and immediately implement the agreed program without hesitation or asking, yet again, what the others could do in addition for Greece," German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble was quoted as saying. "The ball is in Greece's field; it is in their hands to achieve that Europe's citizens can regain trust. But this will only be achieved through concrete measures and actions."

The Sunday tabloid published a survey on Greece that it had commissioned with Italy's Corriere della Sera, Spain's ABC and France's Le Journal Du Dimanche.

In it, 78 percent of the Germans polled, 65 percent of the French and about a half of the Italians said Greece should leave the eurozone if it fails to pay its debt.

Microsoft Dividend, Mexican Debt: Today's Hunt For Income Turns Investors Into Globetrotters

Remember what grandma?s basket of goodies used to look like?

Her portfolio, that is. What she planned to live on during her declining years. In the past, that probably meant a smattering of U.S. government bonds, perhaps some dividend-paying stocks.

Today, that wouldn?t keep a household going for long. A slow American recovery, along with Europe?s problems and a permeating sense of worry means greater interest in income-building assets. In turn, that means lower yields, and in some cases, a money-losing investment on government bonds. That means raised eyebrows over companies? ability to shell out steady cash. And that means the S&P 500?s dividend yield is near 2%, about a third of its 10-year average.

Gran needs to go global. These days, it?s as much about Mexican debt as Microsoft?s dividend.

That?s how PIMCO?s Curtis Mewbourne sees things. I recently caught up with Mewbourne, to determine where the fixed-income money man expects the greatest returns in this topsy-turvy world. Serving as both a portfolio manager and on PIMCO?s investment committee, Mewbourne possess a fine-tuned outlook. Edited excerpts from our conversation:

FORBES: What?s confronting income-oriented investors today?

Mewbourne: The changes in the global financial market mean that some asset classes and some securities are changing, and their use in a portfolio is changing, too. Five years ago, a European saving for his child?s education would have sensibly said, I want steady returns, so I?ll invest in European government bonds. Fast forward to today, just a few years later, and you may have a very different opinion on those investments. You?re looking at losing some of your principal and questioning the steadiness of that income.

Another matter: central banks around the world have reduced interest rates to incredibly low levels. That caused a distortion of the prices and yields from government bonds. In Europe, the U.S. and Japan, government bonds can yield less than inflation. You?re getting negative returns?you?re losing money buying those bonds.

Should a portfolio be concentrated in one area?a place with more perceived safety, perhaps?

We?re basically trying to broaden our opportunity set and trying to have more smaller exposures to more areas. It?s not so much about any one broad market. It?s more how many different opportunities you can find.

Where are you looking for bonds?

HBT: Orioles cut Moyer, 49 ? is he finally done?

The Orioles were hoping that Jamie Moyer would make one more start in the minors before possibly joining the major league roster, but that won?t happen. The team just announced that Moyer asked for and was granted his release.

Moyer was released by the Rockies earlier this month after posting a miserable 5.70 ERA over 10 starts. The 49-year-old left-hander quickly latched on with the Orioles on a minor league deal and pitched well during his time with with Triple-A Norfolk, posting a 1.69 ERA and 16/0 K/BB ratio in 16 innings across three starts. However, the Orioles weren?t prepared to add him to the major league roster.

It?s not clear if Moyer has any leads with other teams, but if history is any indication, we shouldn?t count him out just yet.

HOUSTON -- A Houston pastor and his wife are in the Harris County jail charged with bilking their former congregation out of more than $400,000 and using that money for gambling trips to Louisiana.

Charles Gilford, 58, and Adriane Gilford, 53, were indicted Wednesday by a Harris County grand jury and charged with aggregate theft and "misapplication of fiduciary property."?

Prosecutors allege the Gilfords used at least $430,000 in church funds to gamble at the Coushatta Casino near Lake Charles between 2004 and 2007. They were pastor and first lady of Bethel Institutional Missionary Baptist Church (BIMBC) on Selinsky Road in southeast Houston at the time.

"Over that three-year period of time as fiduciaries there, they were able to take that total of $430,000 from that little Baptist church," said Amy McCauley with the white collar crimes section of the Harris County District Attorney?s Office.

At that little Baptist church, a fixture in this neighborhood for decades, the current leadership told us they didn?t want to comment on the case. The Gilford?s left BIMBC five years ago.

But close friends say they have trouble believing the couple would steal from their congregation.

"And when I tell you impeccable people, outstanding people willing to help, I just, this is a little bit too much for me," said friend Regina Davis when she learned about the arrests.

"It doesn?t make sense," added her son Freddie Davis.? "As far as I know, they are really genuine people, both pastor Gilford and sister Gilford. They have been courteous and amazing over the years."

But after pouring over boxes and boxes of financial records, prosecutors convinced a grand jury to indict the pair on charges that carry anywhere from 5 years to life in prison.

Adriane Gilford was also arrested by Pearland police in 2010 on a felony charge of writing bad checks in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana.?She and her husband lived in Pearland at the time.

Charles and Adriane Gilford are each held on $800,000 bail in the Harris County Jail. They are due in court on Monday.

An Overview of Computers and Technology Law | Internet Contents

The 21st century truly is the ?high tech age.? As a consequence, computers and technology law is of crucial importance. In point of fact there are an ever growing number of issues relating to computers and technology law at this juncture in history. With that in mind, this overview of computers and technology law is presented.

One of the more active areas in regard to computers and technology law involves issues stemming from copyright. When it comes to computers, the Internet and technology law, copyright issues have become very commonplace. Protecting copyright interests with the growth of the Internet has become particularly problematic. In point of fact, with the growth of the Internet, and with the increasing incidence and complexity of copyright issues associated with the Net, there is a whole new legal specialty including attorneys that focus their practices on these issues.

Copyright issues extend beyond the Internet as well into the arena of software and hardware development as well. In regard to computers and technology law, the protection of intellectual property associated with software and hardware is extremely important. Once again, this is an area which has given rise to a whole new legal specialty consisting of attorneys who are focusing their energy and efforts on protection the intellectual property interests of those men, women and companies involved in the design and development of software applications and computer related hardware.

Of course, some of the most important developments that have occurred in regard to computers and technology law are related to music and the downloading of music off of the Internet and World Wide Web. Through both litigation in courts and statutes and regulations that have gone into effect, there continues to be a great deal of activity in the arena of protecting the copyright interest of people involved in the music industry on different levels.

Although it has not become as prevalent as many industry analysts predicted, there has been a slow but nonetheless fairly steady increase in the number of people who are using ebooks at the present point in time. (Many experts predicted about five years ago that there would be a significant number of people using and reading ebooks by this point in time. While this significant increase that was contemplated in the past has not occurred, the number of ebook users is higher than it was five years ago.)

With the increase in ebook usage -again, which is expected to expand at least to some degree in the next few years ? there has been a growing concern associated with protecting the copyright interest of authors who are finding their work in ebook form. On a number of levels, it is a more complicated task to protect written materials that are included in ebooks that is the case with traditional, ?brick and mortar world? publications. Therefore, in regard to computers and technology law, there is a growing interest amongst attorneys in developing more effective avenues through which the content of ebooks can be protected in this high tech age.

Home Repairing Ideas ~ Home Improvement - Refurbishment and ...

As energy costs continue to rise, there are many things you can do to increase energy efficiency in your home through home repair. There is much more emphasis these days on green living. There are many reasons to review your energy expenditures in your home and make home repairs to increase energy efficiency.
Cutting energy usage in your home is great for your finances and the planet. The first thing you want to do is conduct a home energy audit to determine where home repairs are needed. Once you have identified where you can make improvements, there are easy steps to take.
Home repair to make things more energy efficient in your home can start with lighting. Using energy efficient bulbs, or LED lighting,? can save an immense amount of money in your electrical bill. Changing lighting can be done by either changing out the bulbs for compact fluorescent bulbs or installing LED lights; you can reduce your energy use by 75%. The other option is to lower the wattage you are using in lamps and fixtures.
Sealing air leaks is a home repair that will save you a lot over time. By lowering the number of drafts in your home, you can effectively decrease your heating bill by 25% or more. Air leaks happen at doors, windows, air conditioning units, electrical outlets, lighting fixtures and a variety of other places in the home. These leaks can be easily fixed by adding caulking or better insulation around the windows and doors. The most prominent area for air leakage is in your attic.? Everywhere a wall meets, or a wire or pipe is run there is a chance for air to leave the home.? Keeping the air you pay to cool or heat inside the home is the most important home repair you can make.
Solar water heating installers are another area in which home repair can effectively decrease the levels of energy produced in your home. This is where a water heater that uses renewable energy can be a big benefit. These run on solar panels and heat water using the sun. Water heaters are the second largest expense regarding your energy bill.
Another home repair to consider is replacing the heating and cooling systems in your home. Anything that is older than 15 years is very inefficient. New energy efficient systems can save you a great deal of money. Sealing and insulating ducts will also help reduce energy costs. Adding programmable thermostats can help to reduce the levels of heating and cooling the home.??

Investing in Graphene "Miracle Material" for Profit - The Market Oracle

Lessons to Help Traders Find Trading Opportunities in Any Market

Companies / Technology Jun 21, 2012 - 07:03 AM

By: Money_Morning

Companies

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleLarry D. Spears writes: Last December, Money Morning technology specialist Michael A. Robinson told you about a radical new material that would soon have a pervasive impact on the U.S. economy - and the entire human race.

Robinson detailed how this new material is so powerful and versatile, it's going to play a key role in new products for the U.S. military, leading tech companies, and medical researchers.

"Stronger than steel and lighter than a feather, this high-tech medium will shape virtually every part of our daily lives by the end of this decade," said Robinson. "The possible uses are almost limitless."

It's called graphene, and it's one of the most versatile elements ever created - useful in a multitude of applications and potentially capable of redefining the world as we know it.

The "Miracle" of Graphene
Specifically, graphene is a two-dimensional structure made from the carbon atoms in graphite - the stuff in pencil leads - but bonded together in honeycomb-like sheets a mere one atom thick.

Imagine a sub-microscopic chicken-wire mesh, but made up of carbon atoms and their connectors rather than metal.

First envisioned back in 1947, graphene didn't become a reality until 2004, when several teams of researchers demonstrated that single layers of carbon atoms could actually be isolated.

Now there's a mad dash to exploit the unique properties of the material, which are impressive:

?Graphene is one of the strongest materials ever created, 200 times stronger than steel and even more durable than diamonds. According to researchers quoted by BBC News, "It would take an elephant balanced on a pencil to break through a sheet of graphene the thickness of Saran Wrap."
?It's highly flexible and can be stretched like rubber without losing its strength.
?It's the thinnest physical material in the world - 3 million sheets of graphene stacked atop one another would be just 1 millimeter thick. It also weighs virtually nothing.
?It conducts both heat and electricity better than copper, and could eventually replace silicon in circuitry, potentially changing the nature of every electronic device in use today. Imagine cell phones the size of a strand of wire or big-screen high-definition televisions no thicker than wall paper - and capable of being rolled up into a one-inch tube and moved anywhere.
?It's incredibly energy efficient and a potentially eco-friendly source of power. MIT researchers recently found they could generate electric current by shining light on graphene, meaning it could be used to revolutionize solar-power collection. A separate study at Northwestern University found graphene could be used to charge lithium-ion batteries - like those used in electric vehicles - 10 times faster and give them 10 times the storage capacity of present models.

It's no wonder then that governments, universities, energy companies and major corporations are pouring huge dollar amounts into graphene research and product development.

For example, Great Britain just dedicated $120 million to further graphene work at the University of Manchester; South Korea has announced $300 million in graphene projects; and the U.S. military is studying potential applications in aircraft, missiles and other high-speed, light-weight equipment.

On the corporate front, an estimated 200 companies - from IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Intel Corp. (Nasdaq: INTC) to international players like Korea's Samsung Corp. and Nokia Corp. (NYSE ADR: NOK) - are working on graphene research and applications.

IBM has already demonstrated a 150 gigahertz (GHz) transistor made of graphene, nearly quadrupling the 40 GHz top speed of the fastest silicon-based device.

Investing in Graphene Stock
By now, you should be chomping at the bit for ways in which to invest in this "miracle material."

As far as retail investors are concerned, currently graphene is a limited market.

First, there's no way to invest in graphene - or the graphite carbon it's made from - as a commodity.

China controls roughly 70% of the market, much as it dominates more than 95% of the world's "rare earths" market, and Beijing is both limiting exports and charging a 20% export duty on graphene. That's one reason its price has more than tripled in the past five years.

For investors who can't wait to get a hold of a graphene stock, the only publicly traded Western alternative would be the Northern Graphite Corp. (CVE: NGC). Its shares are listed on the Canadian Venture Exchange, recent price of $1.71.

NGC mines large-flake graphite from its Bissett Creek site in Northern Ontario, and has used it to successfully produce graphene - which, though larger and slightly heavier, reportedly has higher electrical conductivity, lower resistance and greater transparency than graphene made from Chinese powder or flake graphite.

Given its low price - its 52-week range has been $0.71 to $3.42 - Northern Graphite obviously offers potential, but the company hasn't shown a profit at any time over the past five years and trading volume on the CVE is thin, with notoriously large bid-ask spreads. NGC is ultra-speculative.

As of now, there's no real pure play in graphene research, development or manufacturing, either - but there is something close.

A graphene stock in the manufacturing field is CVD Equipment Corp. (Nasdaq: CVV), recent price $13.12. Partnered with Columbia University's Graphene Labs Inc., CVV manufactures and markets graphene products online via a Website called graphene-supermarket.com.

Unlike NGC, CVD Equipment has shown rising revenue ($30.99 million in 2011) and profits over the past five years, with earnings per share jumping from 11 cents in 2010 to 67 cents in 2011. The company earned 12 cents on revenue of $7.15 million in the first quarter of 2012. Unfortunately, trading volume in CVV shares is also thin - just 71,000 per day - and the stock has already risen from just $3.01 a share in mid-2010, though it is well off its 52-week high of $19.76.

Investing in graphene stock is difficult in that nearly all of the other graphene-related companies are privately held. That includes Michigan-based XG Sciences Inc., one of the largest U.S. graphene suppliers, selling "nanoplatelets" and developing specialized graphene products using them.

However, you can make an indirect investment in XG through POSCO (ADR NYSE: PKX), recent price $82.84, which purchased a 20% share in the company last June.

Obviously, graphene offers remarkable possibilities. It also offers substantial profits for investors, but finding the right vehicle to catch the graphene wave will be a challenge - requiring both patience and close monitoring of companies that may benefit most as the new technologies evolve.

Unsecured Loans: What are they Are and What You ... - Finance News

Secured loans are basically loans wherein borrowers are obliged to place any of their assets as collateral to avail of the cash loan. In case the borrower defaults, the lender has the rights to seize the asset set up as collateral. Now, there is also what is referred to as unsecured loans. So, what is an unsecured loan?

In essence, unsecured loans are loans that do not ask for any collateral. What happens here is that, the borrower merely gives his or her word to pay back the amount loaned. These loans are referred to also as signature loans. Due to the simple fact that the lenders takes up a huge profit risk from these loans, lofty rates of interest are usually associated with unsecured loans.

Now that you have an idea regarding what is an unsecured loan, it is time for you to find out its different forms. Two excellent and, perhaps, most popular forms of unsecured loans are credit cards as well as no credit check payday loans.

Credit Cards

Financial institutions that offer credit cards generally ask for your basic information like name, address, social security number, employment record and monthly income. They allow you to loan a specific sum of cash. They review your credit history and factor in your repayment capacity. Credit cards are said to be the simplest way to describe what is a unsecured loan.

Payday Loans

This is yet another popular form of unsecured loans. Lending firms that offer payday day loans, or also, cash advance loans, agree to offer you the cash upfront after taking your word of paying back the amount loaned on the date that both of you have agreed upon. Here, you will be charged with an interest on the cash that you borrow. The amount of interest will be settled on prior to the carrying out of the contract.

Essentially, any company that offers you straightforward cash service without asking for collateral is providing you with an unsecured loan. A similar arrangement is that of person to person lending. With this, arrangements are normally made via the Internet. Here, an individual agrees to provide you the cash after the agreement that you will pay an interest once you pay back the loan. This particular kind of lending is rising in popularity, more particular for people with poor credit ratings and having difficulties finding institutions to lend them money.

What is an unsecured loan is certainly a good question; however, the better question is what it can really do for you. Well, that is for another discussion altogether. For More information , you can Visit Here.
