Jamie Haase: Why Country Music Stars Should Join the Marijuana Majority

On average, HuffPost readers probably aren't the biggest aficionados of country music. Still, many readers here understand the need for establishing responsible marijuana policy. When it comes to reversing archaic pot prohibition laws across the United States, the most regressive region is the same place where country music prevails most predominantly. In my opinion, one of the main ingredients still needed for successful marijuana reform in the South is public support by prominent country artists.

Surely Willie Nelson comes to mind for many people when the words "country music" and "marijuana" are mentioned together. Yet Willie has many younger allies these days as a new generation of "outlaw" artists are brazenly singing about pot. Though most haven't been as open about legalization as Willie, lyrics about marijuana are craftily blended into many of their songs. The likes of Zac Brown, Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Randy Houser and Jamey Johnson come to mind to name just a few.

Take the following lyrics for example:

Zac Brown: "Gonna lay in the hot sun and roll a big fat one, and grab my guitar and play"
Dierks Bentley: "Let the smoke roll over your lips. Let it all go whatever it is"
Eric Church: "Dig down deep, find my stash. Light it up, take me back"
Randy Houser: "Well I've been known to giggle on a joke. Mostly when I'm smokin' on my smoke"
Jamey Johnson: "So if you go out my back door, just over the hill, you'll see all these plants that's been paying my bills"

I commend these musicians for breaking the taboo and singing about marijuana. I'm not condoning drug use, but as a former federal drug-enforcement agent who's confiscated thousands of pounds of pot and experienced the futility of the plant's prohibition firsthand, I know the substance should be legally on par with alcohol. So props to these artists for keeping it real and singing about marijuana's normalcy. Unfortunately though, country radio isn't keeping it real with their continued censorship of songs involving marijuana use. Instead, many stations are only adding to the reefer-madness taboo. For instance, when Zac Brown mentions the words "fat one" in the song "Toes," many stations edit those words out entirely.

Hopefully this sort of censorship ceases in the future, and country outlets stop undermining the intelligence of their listeners. Not only is it insulting, but it discourages other artists from singing about the truth. Just because other singers haven't necessarily sung about marijuana doesn't mean they don't have a stake in ending its prohibition.

Take Tennessean Kenny Chesney, for example, who graduated from my alma mater, East Tennessee State University. Few people realize this, but Tennessee ranks right up there with West Coast states when it comes to the domestic production of cannabis. The Appalachian Mountains offer perfect terrain and seclusion for harvesting the crop. Yet, unfortunately for the state's lawful citizens, all those profits are only financing an illegal market that's pushing the state's law enforcement resources and prison population to the brink.

And consider George Strait, the king of country music himself, whose sprawling ranch in South Texas sits directly in the crosshairs of Mexico's bloody narco war. His acreage is in Webb County, which is across the Rio Grande and adjacent from Tamaulipas, one of Mexico's most violent states due to its proximity to the enormous drug market that is the United States. In fact, Laredo (the county seat), is one of the places where I worked as a special agent for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

After resigning from law enforcement in 2011, I joined Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, a group of criminal justice professionals opposed to the disastrous war on drugs. Since then, I've spoken regularly on the need for marijuana reform. Living in South Carolina makes this task particularly challenging. Close to eighty percent of Americans now support legalizing medical marijuana, and more than fifty percent support legalizing the substance for recreational use, yet there's still not a single Southern state that allows for the legal use of medical marijuana. This is frustrating to me and to the thousands of others advocating for change in the region, and this is why I believe getting more country artists onboard is so critical.

Thankfully, a new organization called the Marijuana Majority helps reserved proponents of marijuana reform understand that they're not alone, and that a majority of Americans also agree with them. The organization's website features influential voices from all realms of society, showing that support for marijuana legalization is now mainstream and no longer a third rail issue.

That being said, I recently reached out to Zac Brown on behalf of Marijuana Majority hoping to get a quote for the website. I also contacted him on behalf of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) to see if he would spread the word about the upcoming Southern Cannabis Reform Conference in Atlanta on March 15 and 16. Atlanta is, after all, Zac's hometown, and God only knows how beneficial marijuana reform would be for the state and citizens of Georgia (medically, financially and judicially). It remains to be seen whether the country singer will respond, but again, voices like his that resonate with conservative mindsets are missing ingredients needed to effect change in the South.

A lot of times country music gets mocked for its simplicity, but all of the Waylon Jennings- and Johnny Cash-inspired artists I've mentioned in this article represent freedom to me. What could be more about freedom than ending marijuana prohibition? What a person grows on their land or consumes in their bodies shouldn't be dictated by government in a free society. This article is not just a call for more country artists to break the marijuana taboo, but it's also a call for country fans to embrace them when they do. Inevitably, marijuana will be regulated like alcohol across the board in the United States, and with the help of more trailblazing country artists, the South won't be left in the dust when it comes to this reality.

Chester County District Attorney's Office

Shakeem Carter, 20, whose tattoo reads "cutthroat," is accused of murder.

By Kelly Bayliss, NBCConnecticut.com

A man who bears a "cutthroat"?tattoo on his neck is accused of slashing a teen's throat from ear-to-ear for $350.

"It's horrific. I just can't comprehend how this beast could do something like this," said Kayanna Stutzman, a friend of the victim's family.

Two weeks after investigators found blood all over the walls of a burned-out apartment?and then Kevin Allen's body in the ashes, prosecutors charged 20-year-old Shakeem Carter with killing the Norristown, Conn., high school student.

Carter, also from Norristown, killed Allen for $350 the teen had on him, according to Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan.

"I?can rest and sleep now, knowing that he will be rotting in hell,"?Allen's mom, Jacqueline Castille-Dixon, said after Carter was charged.

On February 13, police found Allen's body in his father's burning apartment in the Hanover Garden complex in North?Conventry Township, Chester County.

Blood was found smeared on the staircase to the second floor apartment and in the entryway.

Carter?allegedly sliced Allen's throat from ear to ear. He also stabbed Allen more than 20 times before setting his body on fire, according to the district attorney.

The suspect followed the teen home on a SEPTA bus and attacked him inside the apartment building, according to authorities.

Investigators say the money Carter allegedly stole from Allen was a gift from the teen's father.

"What's the value of a young man's life today??Three hundred and fifty dollars, sadly, is the value of a young man's life today,"?Hogan said.

Brady's reworked deal helps Patriots

Brady agreed to a three-year contract extension with New England on Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, a person familiar with the contract told The Associated Press. The extension is worth about $27 million and will free up nearly $15 million in salary cap room for the team. (AP Photo/John Bazemore, File)

So Tom Brady got a contract extension. Big deal.

Well, yeah ? for the three-time Super Bowl winner and for the Patriots.

There's nothing unusual about one of the game's best quarterbacks and leaders being coveted by his team. Or being rewarded.

What's rare is how well the three-year extension works for both Brady and for New England.

First, the two-time NFL Most Valuable Player, despite some perceptions, did not really take a pay cut with this new deal. It might have sounded that way with salaries of $7 million in 2015, $8 million the next year and $9 million in 2017, far below the going rate for superstar QBs.

Instead, Brady gets a $30 million signing bonus, payable over the next three years, and $57 million overall in a contract that will run through the 2017 season, when he will be 40 years old. Other than backups who are little more than insurance policies, how many quarterbacks even make it on to a roster at 40?

Essentially, he gets $33 million guaranteed for the next two seasons, and he's surely worth it considering that Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and, most likely, Joe Flacco, will earn more in 2013 and '14. Add up each of their Super Bowl rings and it adds up to the number Brady owns.

The extension should have little effect on other quarterback deals, particularly Flacco. The Super Bowl MVP is 28, just entering his prime and in line for a huge contract no matter where he winds up. (Bet on Flacco staying in Baltimore).

Of course, Brady has shown no signs of slowing down ? look at his stats for 2012, including 34 TD passes and eight interceptions, and a 12-4 record. He's still at the peak of his skills, and he wants to be surrounded by players at a similar stage of their careers.

To get that, he understood he needed to rework his contract to free up enough salary cap space for New England to sign more difference makers.

In doing so, Brady not only virtually assured he will finish his career as a Patriot, but at a price that works for him and for owner Robert Kraft. Did he take a mammoth pay cut down the road to ensure that? No, because Brady actually will get more guaranteed money; the final three seasons are guaranteed against injury; and they could be guaranteed in total depending on Brady meeting certain requirements, including being on the active roster for the final game of 2014.

But he also will have those three years of salary far below scale for the position, for cap purposes. And that is where the Patriots get their payoff.

New England has more needs than other contenders, and those holes must be filled now for the Patriots to win their first championship since the 2004 season. Yes, it has been that long.

Brady recognizes that, and by helping free up $15 million in space over the next two years, the Patriots can spend more in free agency.

Coach Bill Belichick tends to find role players such as Danny Woodhead, Julian Edelman and Steve Gregory, and he gets solid production from them. Brady makes just about everyone on offense better, too.

But the Patriots don't have too many true studs, particularly on defense. Opponents in big games ? the Ravens, Giants, 49ers come to mind ? have found favorable matchups that led to major victories.

Brady sees that. By reworking his contract, he basically has told the Patriots to spend the newfound money in ways that will turn those matchups back in New England's favor.

Unquestionably, Brady wants his favorite target, slot receiver Wes Welker, to be re-signed. He'd love for Belichick to find a consistent deep threat at wideout, too.

Top cornerback Aqib Talib, acquired in a trade with Tampa Bay during last season, is a free agent. He comes with a checkered past, but behaved with the Patriots in 2012 and played well.

Tackle Sebastian Vollmer, a main reason Brady was sacked just 27 times, also is a free agent.

And Brady would love to see some playmakers let go by other teams land in Foxborough. Such names as former Colts pass rusher Dwight Freeney, Steelers speedy receiver Mike Wallace and Ravens' star safety Ed Reed have been mentioned.

Now, Brady has given the Patriots more money to make improvements, while not really emptying his own pockets.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) ? An hour before tip-off, several Miami Hurricanes stretching on the court craned their necks toward the scoreboard to watch a few of this season's video highlights. Then they made some more.

Shane Larkin scored 22 points and played smothering defense on Erick Green to help the Hurricanes bounce back from a loss and beat Virginia Tech 76-58 Wednesday night.

Despite a slow start, Miami (23-4, 14-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) never trailed and improved to 13-0 at home. The Hurricanes hold a 2?-game edge over second-place Duke in the ACC and can clinch their first conference basketball championship by beating the Blue Devils on Saturday.

"It's just another game on the schedule," Larkin said before he and his teammates dissolved in laughter that acknowledged the comment as nonsense.

"It's going to be a blast," guard Trey McKinney Jones said. "We beat them here this year, and we beat them there last year, so they're going to be gunning for our heads."

Miami shook a 10-day scoring slump just in time for Duke. The Hurricanes were coming off a loss at Wake Forest that ended their 14-game winning streak and their bid to go unbeaten in the ACC, and they went 11 minutes without a basket early against Virginia Tech before pulling away.

"A lot of people wanted to see how we would respond to a loss," Larkin said. "I think we came out and imposed our will."

Virginia Tech (12-16, 3-12) fell deeper into last place in the league. Green, the nation's leading scorer at 25.2 points per game, took a painful spill in the first half and scored only 16 ? just the third time this season he has been held below 20.

The Hurricanes had averaged only 54.7 points over their past three games and again sputtered at the outset, but led 15-14 despite committing five consecutive turnovers and missing seven straight shots.

The Hokies were having trouble scoring, too.

"We weren't able to capitalize on the offensive end," Virginia Tech coach James Johnson said, "and they're too good of a team to hold down for long periods of time. We needed to take advantage of the opportunity we had."

Then the onslaught began against Tech, an 18-point underdog.

Larkin led the way, and not only because of his defense. On consecutive possessions early in the second half, the point guard hit a one-handed runner, sank a 3-pointer and fed Durand Scott for a fast-break layup and a 49-28 lead.

"We had no answer for him," Johnson said. "He's the key to that team."

Kenny Kadji had 20 points, six rebounds and two blocks, while Trey McKinney Jones added 11 points and three steals. Scott, a senior, was held out of the starting lineup for disciplinary reasons. He missed the first 4 minutes and scored nine points.

Larkin shot 8 for 12, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range, and had six assists.

"Shane had a terrific all-around game," coach Jim Larranaga said.

The Hurricanes made 50 percent and went 8 for 21 beyond the arc. They also made 22 of 30 free throws and won a league home game by at least 18 points for the fifth time this year.

"We did a good job driving the ball trying to get to the basket," Kadji said. "People are now playing us more like a jump-shooting team, and Shane and Durand do a good job of getting to the basket."

Green gave the Hokies a scare when he hurt his left side losing the ball and falling in the first half. He went to the bench grimacing but popped a pill and was back in the game a minute later.

Green shot 6 for 13, including just one 3-pointer, and had three turnovers.

"They did a really good job on him," Johnson said. "They trapped him off ball screens, sent two guys at him and did a really good job."

Virginia Tech shot 3 for 16 from 3-point range.

The Hurricanes scored on their first five possessions to grab a 9-2 lead. After their offense stalled, they launched a 23-5 run that included 10 points on the final four possessions of the first half for a 38-19 lead.

Mamaa: Reflection of Ethnomathematics February, 20th 2013.

Rachma Hanan Tiasto

International Mathematics Education

***************************************************************************

Life is fluid, flexible and soft. Life is fluid and relative. Today you get zero point to know that zero point should not be obtained from integral, calculus, differential and etc. but from ethnomathematics you can get zero point. This proves that in the social sciences if you are not diligent to read, it will be difficult to get a good mark or score.

The element of ethnomathematics is innovative. Get zero point was fair because everything need process not instant. But everything need signs. If a person has no sign, there is no manners, there is no culture, there is no science. Signs in here is the guidelines to want to read. Then don?t ever rely on gambling or speculation. Because if you only memorized the science and not understand, it will be useless.

Ethnomathematics is mathematical contextual in ethnicity. Like street math of Theresia Nunes from San Paulo, Brazil.

Question :

1.????? Hildegradis

How teacher do implement innovative learning methods without having collided with a system- oriented education with a national exam?

Answer :

That should be innovative is yourself, which traditionally is yourself, which is your own authoritarian, democratic is yourself. And so mathematics is yourself, my students. So I will not give ethnomathematics because ethnomathematics is myself. Then each instance or use the online reference for reference. Problems got fortune that one or more of each if it endeavor.

Mathemathics should not be enforced, so please read the references or the articles on my blog. If I associate with the ideology before, mathematics is your activities, students.

So here teacher facilitate students to implement mathematics activities, here I also do ethnomathematics activities and also apllies to all sciences.

This means, whether in teaching to be seen by the minister, there should be CCTV or by the school principal. So if given two hours lesson, then use it to show who you are and based on may articles, you are the student recognition.

Education system that is not conductive to innovative, it is a test for teachers or people who have a strong vision and mission. How liberating education as an investment or education as needed. Just ask elementary school students, junior high school if they think the investment? Of course not. People who think about it are the parents, the owners of capital and etc.

2.????? Nawangwulan

What should be used to evaluate student learning outcomes, if only the national exam cause failure in these areas or in the city? In fact one can not at school graduating students. It's called complications. Our society is experiencing complications. Experiencing an anomalous situation since our society mismanagement. Why are mismanagement? ?Because the leader not think about how Indonesia next 100 years. The first president was temted to become president for his entire life, the second was temted by his children and grandchildren and etc.

President Obama when his inauguration and speech ? Hei my brother, there is still a lots of stars that you will find and they waiting you to get name?. With this speech, he directly invites people to continue to move forward. That is the difference with Indonesia. Now the condition of Indonesia is complicated. The teacher Teachers can not be trusted. Instead of teachers, officials or ministers could not be trusted. We become confused. So now we need a revolution. Required buzz from national figures who know about education, psychology and dare to continue to move forward.?

The destruction of this nation because they do not have a vision as to what Indonesia 100 years. As a result, we are struck by the progress of other nations, capitalism. Usually people who suffer are the people who live on the border or in the suburbs. We are in the estuary between Australia and Asia. This resulted in us confused or do not have a concept for building country.? Especially with the inconsistent leadership and legislative.

So the ideal school graduation should be submitted to the mechanism. Now this impressed all corruption because corrupt otherwise deemed fair.

3.????? Dyah Purboningsih

????????? What is the basic concept of ethnomathematics?

????????? What is the purpose of ethomathematics?

Answer:

????????? The basic concept of ethnomathematics is contextual based on ethnicity.

????????? The purpose of the study is you can use mathematics contextually for innovative learning. Ethnomathematics self just for innovative teacher.

4.????? Venti Indiani

What is street math ?

Answer:

Street math, theresia Nunes performed by observing researching ang publishing. On the street of San Paulo, Brazil apparently there are traders who use mathematics in their own way with fast and accurate result in the calculation. This is be expressed by using a case study.

Hagel confirmed as defense secretary

Former Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel testifies at his Senate Armed Services Committee confirmation hearing on Jan.??The Senate on Tuesday voted to confirm former Nebraska Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel as secretary of defense, overcoming a fierce campaign by some GOP lawmakers to block President Barack Obama's nominee.

Hagel's nomination, which required support from just a majority of the chamber, passed 58-41.

Four Republicans voted to approve Hagel's nomination: Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi, Sen. Mike Johanns of Nebraska and Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama.

Tuesday's vote ended a tumultuous confirmation process that began the moment Obama announced Hagel as his choice to replace outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. Despite Hagel's tenure in the Senate, many of his former colleagues refused to endorse him for the defense post, pointing to his past comments about the U.S. relationship to Israel and Iran's nuclear program.

Even some Democrats showed hesitancy about confirming Hagel at first. It was not until he made a series of personal visits to key members of the party that he was able to secure their support.

During his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Hagel faced a grilling from senators on the panel who pressed him on a wide rang of topics. Hagel's performance was disappointing, but the White House stood by its choice.

The first attempt in the Senate to end debate fell short in the face of an unprecedented GOP filibuster two weeks ago, with Democrats just one vote shy of the 60 needed to proceed to confirm Hagel. (The tally showed 58 votes in favor, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid changed his vote to ?no? as it was needed to secure the right under parliamentary rules to bring up Tuesday?s vote.)

Last week 15 Republicans sent a letter to Obama urging him to withdraw Hagel's nomination, citing his record and comments he made in the past about Iran's nuclear weapons program. The White House dismissed the request.

Now that he has been confirmed, it remains unclear clear how the sustained battering will affect Hagel's tenure at the Pentagon. But the rough handling he got from his fellow Republicans and former colleagues shows one thing for sure: The former lawmaker cannot count on getting the benefit of the doubt from Congress as he moves to deal with spending cuts that start coming into force on Friday, or takes on challenges overseas like the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Readers Write: Strengthen families to curb gun violence; less government, better economy

Letters to the Editor for the February 25, 2013 weekly print issue: Until America strengthens its families society will continue to struggle with selfishness and violence;?Government is not a multiplier. It is a subtracter. A government can print money, but it cannot produce wealth.

Strengthen families to curb violence

Regarding The Monitor's View of Jan. 28, "Obama gun plan: one blank": I was heartened to see an editorial that was insightful and unafraid to express what I think is the most important action suggested to address gun violence ? in-depth research on its causes and prevention.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

To place too much emphasis on the relationship between violence and the media is a simplistic answer to a very complex problem ? a problem that is ultimately brought about by the deterioration of the basic unit of society, the family. The family unit has been manipulated and distorted over the past 50 years to the extent that it is barely recognizable, and the results are obvious.

Research shows that it is through a loving and supportive family life that parents and children learn discipline, responsibility, compassion, and a sense of fulfillment, and thus become a positive influence on one another and society as a whole. But for too many, marriage has become "irrelevant" and children "a complication."

Until America strengthens its families through respect for traditional marriage and freedom of religion, and takes personal responsibility for not only ourselves but others, our society will continue to struggle with selfishness and ultimately fail as a culture that has much to offer its own citizens and the citizens of the world.

Less government for a better economy

The Jan. 28 Focus article "So where are we now?" asks why the US economy is lagging. A few of us may answer: The economy lags when government takes money from the pockets of those who work for a living ? money that consumers cannot spend as they see fit. Government is not a multiplier; it is a subtracter. A government can print money, but it cannot produce wealth.

This government has, to an unnecessary degree, inserted itself between the consumer and the producer, leading to a middleman that makes costly decisions that should be made by consumers.

Less government is the answer.

Five Favorite Films with Jason Mewes

You know him most famously as the "Jay" in "Jay and Silent Bob," the odd couple that frequently pops up in Kevin Smith's films (Smith himself plays Silent Bob), but Jason Mewes has managed to stay quite busy outside of his collaborations with his longtime friend (which currently includes a weekly podcast). His latest role comes in noobz, a wacky road trip comedy that pokes fun at the world of competitive gaming. Mewes recently stopped by the RT office for a guest spot on our Rotten Toatoes radio show and stayed a bit longer to offer us his Five Favorite Films, so without further ado, here they are!

Krush Groove is awesome because it has all the old hip-hop people that I like. You know, LL Cool J, Run-DMC, who I love, Fat Boys, Sheila E. One of my favorite scenes in any movie is in that movie when Run comes out and he's like "We have a whole lot of superstars..." It just gives me goosebumps when I watch it.

House Party is a favorite of mine because Kevin and I, when we first started hanging out actually, we started watching that movie. I watched it with him, he sort of introduced me to it. It has Martin Lawrence who's amazing, and some of my favorite quotes are from that movie. That whole house party dance with Kid n Play where they do the kicking and dancing, me and my buddies used to go to parties and try to do that and it's obnoxious.

Serenity (Joss Whedon, 2005; 82% Tomatometer)

Firefly or Serenity (the movie)... that was a really good show. I was really into Buffy and Angel, and when I was done watching them I was really bummed about it being over, and I'm like "I can't believe I've watched them all, what's next?" My buddy said "Hey, the guy who created that, Joss Whedon, also created a different show, called Firefly." So I watched that and there were only a few episodes, one season, but they made the movie, which was amazing. I'm just super into sci-fi.

I just really dug the whole thing, and it's something... I don't if I can explain it, except for Jack Skellington [Jason stars singing] "What's this? What's this?" The singing and the cool horror, it was just a different movie for me.

Star Wars (George Lucas, 1977; 93% Tomatometer)

I'm sure a lot of people say this one. As a kid, the toys, the action figures, being able to watch the three movies, and being able to watch them over and over, and then so many years later, they came out with the new ones. And now they going to make more. It was a big movie growing up. As a kid, again, the toys -- I go back and watch some of those old commercials for [putting on his announcer voice] "The Millennium Falcon!" it just gives me goosebumps and reminds me of my childhood. Growing up, I didn't get any of the toys; my family couldn't afford to buy them. But what was awesome was my friend, he had two brothers, and they all wanted the same Star Wars toys, so their parents would get them three TIE fighters, or three Death Star sets. So on Christmas, I'd open up my presents, run to my friend's house, and they would get every single Star Wars thing, and I could play with them. And then they got into GI Joe, and they had the big hovercraft, and the space shuttle, it was awesome. Anyway, the combination of the movies and the toys makes it a classic for me.

Ex-surgeon general C. Everett Koop dies

C. Everett Koop, who raised the profile of the surgeon general by riveting America's attention on the then-emerging disease known as AIDS and by railing against smoking, died Monday in New Hampshire. He was 96.

An assistant at Koop's Dartmouth institute, Susan Wills, said he died in Hanover, where he had a home. She didn't disclose the cause of his death.

Koop wielded the previously low-profile post of surgeon general as a bully pulpit for seven years during the Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations.

An evangelical Christian, he shocked his conservative supporters when he endorsed condoms and sex education to stop the spread of AIDS.

He carried out a crusade to end smoking in the United States ? his goal had been to do so by 2000. A former pipe smoker, he said cigarettes were as addictive as heroin and cocaine.

Koop's impact was great, although the surgeon general has no real authority to set government policy. He described himself as "the health conscience of the country."

"My only influence was through moral suasion," Koop said just before leaving office in 1989.

By then, his Amish-style silver beard and white braided uniform were instantly recognizable.

Out of office, he switched to business suits and bow ties but continued to promote public health causes, from preventing childhood accidents to better training for doctors.

"I will use the written word, the spoken word and whatever I can in the electronic media to deliver health messages to this country as long as people will listen," he promised.

In 1996, he rapped Republican presidential hopeful Bob Dole for suggesting that tobacco is not invariably addictive, saying Dole's comments "either exposed his abysmal lack of knowledge of nicotine addiction or his blind support of the tobacco industry."

Although Koop eventually won wide respect with his blend of old-fashioned values, pragmatism and empathy, his nomination in 1981 met a wall of opposition from women's groups and liberal politicians.

Critics said Reagan selected Koop, a pediatric surgeon from Philadelphia, only because of his conservative views, especially his staunch opposition to abortion.

Foes noted that Koop traveled the country in 1979 and 1980 giving speeches that predicted a progression "from liberalized abortion to infanticide to passive euthanasia to active euthanasia, indeed to the very beginnings of the political climate that led to Auschwitz, Dachau and Belsen."

But Koop, a devout Presbyterian, was confirmed after he told a Senate panel he would not use the surgeon general's post to promote his religious ideology. He kept his word.

In 1986, he issued a frank report on AIDS, urging the use of condoms for "safe sex" and advocating sex education as early as third grade.

He also maneuvered around uncooperative Reagan administration officials in 1988 to send an educational AIDS pamphlet to more than 100 million U.S. households, the largest public health mailing ever done.

Koop personally opposed homosexuality and believed sex should be saved for marriage. But he insisted that Americans, especially young people, must not die because they were deprived of explicit information about how the HIV virus was transmitted.

He became a hero to AIDS activists, who chanted "Koop, Koop" at his appearances but booed other administration officials.

Koop further angered conservatives by refusing to issue a report requested by the Reagan White House, saying he could not find enough scientific evidence to determine whether abortion has harmful psychological effects on women.

Koop maintained his personal opposition to abortion, however. After he left office, he told medical students it violated their Hippocratic oath. In 2009, he wrote Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid urging that health care legislation include a provision to ensure doctors and medical students would not be forced to perform abortions. The letter briefly set off a security scare because it was hand delivered.

Koop served as chairman of the National Safe Kids Campaign and as an adviser to President Bill Clinton's health care reform plan.

At a congressional hearing in 2007, Koop spoke about political pressure on the surgeon general post. He said Reagan was pressed to fire him every day, but Reagan would not interfere.

Koop, worried that medicine had lost old-fashioned caring and personal relationships between doctors and patients, opened an institute at Dartmouth to teach medical students basic values and ethics.

He also was a part-owner of a short-lived venture, drkoop.com, to provide consumer health care information via the Internet.

Koop was born in New York's borough of Brooklyn, the only son of a Manhattan banker and the nephew of a doctor. He said by age 5 he knew he wanted to be a surgeon and at age 13 he practiced his skills on neighborhood cats.

He attended Dartmouth College, where he received the nickname Chick, short for "chicken Koop." It stuck for life.

Koop was by far the best-known surgeon general, and decades after he left the job he was still a recognized personality, colleagues recalled.

"I was walking down the street with him one time" about five years ago, recalled Dr. George Wohlreich, director of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, a medical society with which Koop had longstanding ties. "People were yelling out, 'There goes Dr. Koop!' You'd have thought he was a rock star."

Dr. Joseph O'Donnell, an oncologist and professor at the Geisel School of Medicine, where the Koop Institute is located, said he shared Koop's desire to focus on disease prevention.

"When he decided he was going to come here I felt like I died and went to heaven," said Donnell, who is the senior scholar at the institute. "He was my hero, and we worked a lot together."

Koop received his medical degree at Cornell Medical College, choosing pediatric surgery because so few surgeons practiced it.

In 1938, Koop married Elizabeth Flanagan, the daughter of a Connecticut doctor. They had four children ? Allen, Norman, David and Elizabeth. David, their youngest son, was killed in a mountain-climbing accident when he was 20.

Koop's wife died in 2007, and he married Cora Hogue in 2010.

Koop was appointed surgeon-in-chief at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia and he also served as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

He pioneered surgery on newborns and successfully separated three sets of conjoined twins. He won national acclaim by reconstructing the chest of a baby born with the heart outside the body.

Although raised as a Baptist, he was drawn to a Presbyterian church near the hospital, where he developed an abiding faith. He began praying at the bedside of his young patients ? ignoring the snickers of some of his colleagues.

"It used to be said in World War II that there were no atheists in foxholes," he wrote in 1973. "I have found there are very few atheists among the parents of dying children.

"This is a time when religious faith can see a family through trying circumstances."

HP Slate 7 hands-on (update: video)

Well, this might just be the biggest news to come out of Mobile World Congress. Long after discontinuing the TouchPad (and the rest of its mobile devices, for that matter) HP is back with a new tablet. This time, though, it runs not webOS, but an old safety: Android. Interestingly, though, HP is returning to the tablet space not with a high-end flagship, but a lower-end device priced to sell. The Slate 7 is priced at $169, with modest specs that include a dual-core A9 processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of built-in storage, a 7-inch, 1,024 x 600 display and dual 3MP / VGA cameras. All that said, it could be worth a second look when it goes on sale in April. Meet us past the break to see what we mean.
