On The Way To Warmer Weather

Another great weekend day enjoyed across north Texas. Highs reached up into the low 80?s despite the brisk north winds this afternoon that gusted in the 25-30mph range. A weak cold front is moving through our area bringing in some drier air and setting up a mild Monday.

CHILLY NIGHT AHEAD

Clear skies tonight and diminishing winds mean significant radiation cooling. The sun warmed up the ground all day today but the dry air in place and light winds will allow that heat to radiate out back into the atmosphere. So even though we hit 80-plus this afternoon lows will drop down to the upper 40?s tonight. It?ll get into the low 40?s across the Red River valley.

A WEEK OF WARM STARTS MILD

This dry air warms quickly when there?s lots of sunshine. Sunny skies will get us into the low 70?s, it?s only the fact of a little bit of a northeast wind that?ll keep highs below normal (typical this time of April? 78?).

Winds turn to the south on Tuesday. Those winds get strong out of the south and southwest for the rest of the week. This means two things: 1) it?ll get much warmer and 2) the humidity is going to return.

The longest streak of 80? or warmer days so far here in 2012 is three days. The extended right now shows a run of six days. Its starts on Tuesday and by Wednesday we?ll get in the 90?s in our western counties. In fact further west of us in Abilene it could hit 100?. ?For the DFW area we?ll likely stay just into the upper 80?s but expect Wednesday and Thursday to have the hottest days of the year so far.

It?ll be dry as well. We are not expecting any significant chances of rain until Sunday and those chances right now are only at 20%. We?ll see. We are expecting a storm system to develop in the plains; if it drops closed to north Texas in its track east we?ll be increasing those rain chances.

DESTRUCTIVE SNOW FORECAST IN THE EAST

By the way, despite the mild winter and quick start to Spring across most of the country a late-season snow storm is brewing. It?ll bring as much as a foot of snow in the higher elevations in West Virginia, western Pennsylvanian and New York state. These are areas that have already seen some of the tree leaves start to come out; this will be a heavy, wet snow. Expect to hear stories of power outages where the heavy snow falls.
