Apple details iPhone 5's new camera: 8MP, 'same as iPhone 4S but thinner'

Apple details iPhone 5's new camera 8MP, 'same as iPhone 4S but thinner'

Apple's got a new camera its brand new iPhone 5: 8-megapixels with a 3,264 x 2,448 backside-illuminated sensor, five-element lens, and f/2.4 aperture sits on the rear of the new device. "Same as the iPhone 4S, but thinner." 25 percent thinner in fact, to match the now slimmer iPhone. The branding remains the same -- it's still the iSight -- but a few new bells and whistles have been added alongside the slimming. A new dynamic low light mode, for one, and a fancy sapphire crystal cover. The phone's new A6 processor also helps out, offering a "smart filter" for better color matching, as well as speedier capture and still capture during video.

In terms of functionality, there's a new panorama mode, that allows picture stitching for multiple images into one larger shot (a whopping 28 megapixels in total). Photo sharing is also getting expanded, adding more social functionality -- images can be shared with multiple friends or family members, and then those folks can comment.

But you only care about video, don't you? You'll be glad to hear that it's getting expanded as well. The rear camera is identical to the 4S, albeit with better image stabilization. The front facing camera now offers 720p video capture for all your extreme close-ups -- also for FaceTime, which will be available via LTE on the iPhone 5. But on all cellular networks? We're not so sure just yet.

9/11: US troops today feel more appreciated, but still poorly understood

Eleven years after 9/11 there are more frequent overt expressions of support for US troops. But with so few Americans in uniform, military families say, the true cost of service is little understood.

Eleven years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks ? and more than a decade after America?s longest war began ? the troops still fighting overseas say they feel a greater appreciation than ever for the work they do.

On the anniversary of 9/11 and throughout the year, they get standing ovations at sports stadiums and robust applause on airplanes.

But whether most Americans actually understand what members of the armed forces do or share in their sacrifice, they add, is another matter.

?I fear they do not know us,? retired Adm. Mike Mullen, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in a 2011 address to West Point?s graduating class.

?I fear they do not comprehend the full weight of the burden we carry or the price we pay when we return from battle.??

Clearly, it?s not from lack of compassion in the American public, Mr. Mullen and others are quick to stress. But the standing ovations and care packages for troops ? while well intended ? often only reinforce the impression among military families and spouses that a wide gulf of understanding separates them from the rest of America.?

A big reason for the divide is the oft-quoted statistic ? particularly among troops ? that less than 1 percent of Americans currently serve in the military.?More precisely, during this decade of sustained warfare, only about half a percent of the US public has been on active duty at any given time. (At the height of World War II, the comparable figure was 9 percent, according to the Pew Research Center.)?

In a survey released in May by Blue Star Families, a military advocacy group, an?overwhelming majority of the 4,200 military respondents and their loved ones ? 95 percent ? said they agreed with the statement that most Americans ?do not truly understand or appreciate the sacrifices made by the service members and their families.??

Another 40 percent said that their community ?did not embrace opportunities to help military children.??

The anniversary of the 9/11 attacks offers an opportunity for Americans to reach out to military service members, and that is very much appreciated, says Vivian Greentree, the director of research and policy at Blue Star Families. But the message doesn't always get through to those who need it, she adds.?

?It?s important to be reflective, but it?s even more important to take action,? she says.?

For example, Rebekah Sanderlin, whose Army husband is stationed at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C.,?recalls going to a concert in Nashville, Tenn., with her mom last year. The stadiumgoers got on their feet to cheer the troops. ?I just started crying, and my mom couldn?t understand why. She said, ?They do this all the time.? ?

LG front-runs Sony with ultra-definition 84-in TV

(AP) ? LG says an 84-inch TV that has four times the resolution of standard HDTVs is going to be in stores in October for $20,000.

That means LG Electronics USA is pushing out its set with so-called "4K" resolution before Sony Corp., which will have a similar set in stores in December for $25,000.

The set's resolution will be 3,840 by 2,160 pixels, which compares with 1920 by 1080 pixels for today's best HDTVs.

There is, for now, very little video content available that can take advantage of the higher resolution. There are no cable or satellite channels at that resolution, and Blu-ray discs max out at HDTV resolution.

LG warns that if and when a standard for "4K" broadcasts is developed, these first sets may not be compatible.

Discovering the Best Automotive Repair Franchise that will Treat ...

If you drive for a long enough time, at some point road debris will damage your windshield and you will need the services of an auto glass franchise. Even the tiniest crack in your windshield can become a significant safety hazard if it expands and cracks while you are on the road.
This fact will send many of us in search of a window replacement company, but entire replacement isn?t always necessary. Oftentimes a cracked windshield can easily be fixed at a lower expense. Having a cracked windshield fixed is equally as safe as having it replaced entirely if the task is done properly. The issue you have is finding the best windshield repair company. All windshield repair organizations aren?t created equal. Here are a few pieces of advice which will show in detail how to find the windshield repair franchise for your needs.

Focus on reputation. Make sure that you find a business with a solid reputation and never take a company?s word for how great their work is. A good way to find out a company?s reputation is through referrals, review sites, online directory listings, and the Better Business Bureau internet site to tell you if it is a good windshield repair business opportunity. Use these resources to learn about these organizations. Ask your prospective windshield repairer for referrals, and ask for before and after pictures. The Better Business Bureau will list any complaints about the enterprise. Do your research to ensure you are hiring the best windshield repair company in your area.

Insurance and bonding are vital in making your choice. What if something goes wrong while they are fixing your windshield? Are they bonded? Do they have insurance? What is their replacement policy? Only conduct business with an organization that has the correct insurance and a replacement policy for if they further damage your windshield to the point at which it?ll need to be replaced. Here?s where reputation also comes into place. Read testimonials that permit you to know how the pros handle a mistake. Anyone can look great when things go correctly, but it takes a true professional to handle things when there are unforeseen accidents.

Make sure that you also have a service agreement. All the promises, guarantees, and replacement policies are worth nothing if they aren?t in writing. Make sure you have a written service agreement, a written replacement policy, and their insurance and bonding info in writing, because it is very difficult to back out of a legal agreement in writing. Having things in writing helps both parties concerned. It protects the customer from damage and bad work. It also protects the service provider against false claims.

Finding the best windshield repair company for your car takes a little research and required groundwork, but it is truly worth the extra time. There are several top quality and reliable windshield repair organizations in the United States, but there also are a few bad apples. These pointers will help protect you and your car from getting less than ideal repairs. Make sure that you have referrals, testimonials, reviews, an agreement, and everything in written form. Doing these easy steps will protect you and make sure that your windshield will be fixed correctly.

HK pro-democracy parties disappointed in key vote

HONG KONG (AP) ? Election results released Monday gave an edge to the pro-China faction in Hong Kong's legislature, where power is split between those aligned with Beijing and those who favor further democratic reforms. The pro-democratic parties, however, retained enough of a majority to veto any proposed changes to the former British colony's constitution.

Many expected that Hong Kong's broad array of pro-democracy parties would make big gains with support from people increasingly frustrated with the semiautonomous Chinese city's new Beijing-backed leader over a wide range of issues.

Large protests over plans to introduce patriotism classes in schools forced the government to back down on Saturday, the eve of the election. But the pro-democracy camp could not capitalize on the momentum because long-running feuds and rivalries prevented it from mounting a unified strategy, politicians and analysts said.

In Sunday's election, 40 of the 70 seats on the Hong Kong Legislative Council were decided by voters, and those were split fairly evenly between the two sides, according to results released by election officials. Pro-democratic candidates won 21 seats ? 18 seats in local districts and three more so-called "super seats" open to nearly all voters city wide. Pro-Beijing rivals won 19 seats ? 17 local seats and two super seats.

The other 30 seats on the council were chosen by members of business and special interest groups known as "functional constituencies," most of which are dominated by pro-Beijing figures. Results showed that pro-democracy candidates won only six of those seats, news reports said.

Still, pro-democracy candidates will retain 27 of the 70 seats, more than the minimum 24 needed for veto power on constitutional issues, the most contentious of which is the eventual introduction of full democracy. Beijing has pledged to allow Hong Kong residents to choose their leader by 2017 and all lawmakers by 2020, although no roadmap has yet been laid out. The newly elected lawmakers will help set up those elections.

Disappointed supporters blamed a splintering of the many parties that comprise the pro-democracy camp for the lack of a strategy against their pro-Beijing rivals, who had more resources to use Hong Kong's complex electoral system to their advantage.

Albert Ho, chairman of the main Democratic Party, apologized and resigned.

"Our party will certainly learn from this failure," he said. "We'll have a deep reflection and then work out our plan for reform in the future."

The election drew a strong turnout, with 53 percent of the territory's 3.5 million registered voters casting ballots, 8 percentage points higher than in the last election in 2008. That shows a strong desire for political reform among residents in the semiautonomous region, as well as discontent with the city's Beijing-backed leader, analysts said.

"The higher voter turnout reflects the people's frustrations with the C.Y. Leung administration," said Willy Lam, a professor at Chinese University of Hong Kong. The high turnout reflects public unease over the government's aborted plan to introduce Chinese patriotism classes that many feared would be a form of brainwashing, Lam said.

The dispute "galvanized ordinary people to take part in politics, and this is something which the C.Y. Leung administration has to bear in mind because now more people are getting educated and politicized," he said.

Leung Chun-ying, also known as C.Y. Leung, became Hong Kong's leader, or chief executive, in July after being picked by an elite pro-Beijing committee.

Hong Kong, a freewheeling Asian financial center, was handed back to China in 1997 after a century of British rule, but it was granted a high degree of autonomy and allowed to keep its separate political system.

Sunday's vote was the first in which the public had a say in more than half of who was elected. Previously, the Legislative Council had 60 seats evenly split between publicly elected lawmakers and functional constituencies. The 10 new seats added this year are part of political reforms introduced in line with provisions in Hong Kong's mini-constitution as a step toward full democracy.

No More? Damn.

For a few weeks now I have been looking for a high fantasy or realistic survival roleplay to join. With no luck, I've decided to make one myself. Below I have a few ideas that I hope will generate interest. Both of the games are far from original or groundbreaking. My focus when roleplaying is on: characters, players, and their interaction between each other. World and story means nothing if you don't have talented writers and three dimensional characters. Each story will be heavily character driven relying on, us and our character to make the roleplay interesting. So, without further delay, allow me to present my brainchildren:
    Metal and Magic
This is a high fantasy roleplay which takes place on a fictional earth in the fictional city of Sunder Bay. Sunder Bay is a chain of islands known as the 7 pearls, together they make up of the worlds most renown center of commerce and trade. There is no order, no law, or government in Sunder Bay; though control of the islands have been sought after by many for years. In Sunder Bay, money is power and strength is respect; have enough of both, and the Cursed Crown can be yours. But, rulers of Sunder Bay have a growing history of being usurped, assassinated, and/or being overthrown. This is why she continues to be the untamable kingdom of the sea.

The plot of this game will be based solely around our characters. There is no set lore or history, so the sky is the limit for your characters. Any race and class is available, I won't hamper your creativity. With no set history or established factions, your character's background is completely up to you. You can be the head of local law enforcement, pirate lord, merchant king, or the would-be ruler over Sunder Bay. That might seem like to much freedom, but I will be strict with my reviewing process. My charity in relation to what I allow, will be based on the quality of your character.

    Last Man Standing
This is a realistic-science-fiction-survival-horror roleplay. There is no defined lore, I am open to any popular per-existing universe, like: Resident Evil, Walking Dead, Fallout, etc. I'm not interested in creating my own story, nor do I want a literal fan-fic. Eventually, I know I will end up encroaching on the borders of one of these awesome franchises. So why not go ahead and decide which one I will borrow from? As of now, I am highly considering the Walking Dead because of the simplicity or Resident Evil because of the variety in creatures and extensive history.

I want the plot to be centered around the downfall of a safe-zone and a handful of survivors as they search for a new home. We will start off right in the midst of chaos as the survivors home is being overrun. Then we will continue to follow them as they flee for the lives and try to survive. Creativity and character interaction will be a major part in keeping the story alive and interesting.

That is all I have for now. As GM I will ensure the story progresses and game runs smoothly, while managing the roleplay itself. I am open to any ideas and suggestions. If there is anyone who would like to work with me in developing the roleplay, a co-gm will certainly be welcomed. When I see a majority interest in one, I will end my search and we can begin the roleplay that was selected.

Classic Game Room - CHAMPIONSHIP SOCCER for Atari 2600

Classic Game Room - CHAMPIONSHIP SOCCER for Atari 2600

Classic Game Room was the FIRST classic video game review show on the Internet in 1999. Returning in 2008 with new episodes, Classic Game Room breaks out a review of CHAMPIONSHIP SOCCER for the Atari 2600 video game system. Soccer is called football in many other parts of the world except here in America. We call it soccer. Except nobody watches it anyway. Most Americans would rather watch idiots try and sing pop songs that they didn't write, can't sing and I'm rambling. Soccer is a sport played with a ball and some goals. It is played on a soccer field. This is a video game that replicates that excitement. It's like the ice hockey of the lawn. Soccer. Enjoy a tall cool glass of soccer. David Beckham is not in this game. Neither is Pele. Neither is Joe Montanna. But if they were, it would still be called Championship Soccer. Why? Because it isn't Championship Tennis. Enjoy it because CGRHD doesn't review many sports titles because we're sports inept. If watching science fiction and Star Wars was a sport we'd be the Serena Williams of the Star Trek fan club. Be sure to watch the original Classic Game Room episodes. CGRHD is reviewing video game from the past 30 years, from 1978 to the present including Playstation 3 PS3, Sega Genesis, Nintendo Entertainment System NES, Atari 2600, 7800, N64, Dreamcast and Xbox 360. XBLA.

    Deep Water (2006): Boat Found

The clip Boat Found from Deep Water (2006) Clare: I'd been out for a walk, and I came back with the dog. My sister was with the children. And she said, "The boat's been found." Then I became aware there were several complete strangers on the front lawn and a couple of police cars. Just my instant reaction was, "Get the children out of here." Winspear: You can imagine the atmosphere, the feeling of shock. Clare didn't feel she had the courage at the time to tell the children. So I went to them. Simon: My father's boat had been found, but he wasn't in it. It was so different from the homecoming that we'd expected. It was just like, "This is the wrong story. This is... this is not what's supposed to be happening. This is... it can't be." Swinton: A British cargo ship found Crowhurst's boat drifting in the mid-Atlantic 700 miles from land.

BIG WIN FOR MICROSOFT: Bing Is The Default ... - Business Insider

Tim Cook jeff bezos Jeff Bezos' Explanation Of Why Amazon Charges So Little For The Kindle Fire Is Awesome Microsoft has landed a nice win for its search engine, Bing.

Eliane Fiolet at UberGizmo got some hands on time with the Fire HD and mentioned that "The search box is powered by Bing."

Previously, Google powered web searches on the Kindle Fire.

We've reached out to Microsoft and it told us, "Bing will be the default search provider on the new Kindle Fire HD. No other details are available at this time."

Amazon sold 4-6 million Kindle Fires in the last year, so it's not like Microsoft is suddenly going to mop the floor with Google.

But, Amazon just doubled down on the Fire lineup and will try to sell many millions more. Getting in good with Amazon is another way for Microsoft to win some share in the long run.

It's also another way for Amazon to stick it Google. With the Kindle Fire, it's using Android to build a new hardware ecosystem that cuts out Google and takes more of the lucrative commercial searches.

It's also another way for Amazon to subsidize the cost of its tablets, assuming it's getting a nice revenue share deal with Microsoft.

Twitter?s API Crackdown May Be Bad For Users, Even If They Never Notice

Social-Media-CollageThis week Twitter launched its new API. There are still lots of questions about what this means for developers, and what role developers have played in Twitter's rise. But the general consensus seems to be that it doesn't matter much for most users. Apparently most users just use Twitter's official clients and supposedly will never notice if Twitter bans most third party clients. Even if that's true, I think it's a real shame for the future of social media.

?previews are always delightfully torturous experiences. Delightful because, well, who wouldn?t want to see the classic Chuck Taylors in their new range of colours or the latest and greatest collaborations hitting stores next season? Torturous, though, on account of the fact that the styles I end up coveting most are always from the men?s line and not produced in my size, which I already whined about in my ?post. Yesterday?s Fall 2012 preview was no less delightful?or torturous.

As usual, the designs by John Varvatos were at the top of my list, with the black leather pair with removable high-tops at the very, very top. I?ll be buying the Mister a pair so I can live vicariously through him. A close second was the DC Comics collaboration that I just can?t seem to get enough of, even with ?already in my superhero arsenal. One can never own too many Superman Cons, after all. In the third spot was the pair of hot pink high-tops I scored on my way out of the preview, which are sure to be a weekend favourite this summer.

SUNDAY?S PUZZLE,polo ralph lauren pas cher Sundance Honors ?B,air jordan pas cher ? Even before you start solving, you might notice a couple of details about this grid. For one, at 23?23,jordan femme, it?s larger than normal, which is becoming increasingly rare. We haven?t had one this big since Caleb Madison?s ?Book Binding? in March (,borse prada, ,polo femme Federal Reserve Bank of New York ? The, .) Today there are 171 clues to work through. That?s 30 more than in a typical Sunday.

The standard Sunday size is 21?21. Grids almost always have an odd number of rows and columns. I presume that?s for aesthetic reasons, sac longchamp, so you can have a central unique row and column, but feel free to offer your own theories. It could just be .

Experienced solvers may notice the other detail right away and even conclude,SECOND SUNDAY PUZZLE,gucci borse sac louis vuitton borse cha, ralph lauren pas cher, before looking at a single clue, ralph lauren pas cher louis vuitton pas cher peuterey outlet, that this puzzle probably has rebus squares. How can that be? The grid has left-right mirror symmetry instead of the standard rotational symmetry. It?s a safe bet, especially on Sunday, prada occhiali borse louis vuitton lunette ray ban, lunette ray ban pas cher, sac longchamp, that this means there is some hidden visual element in the grid. Images can emerge by connecting circles, polo ralph lauren pas cher, longchamp pas cher, only today there aren?t any. There?s nothing in the black square pattern that looks like anything in particular. That leaves rebus squares as the remaining standard way to define a new visual pattern. Sure enough, that?s what?s going on today.

There are 19 rebus squares, ray ban pas cher sac louis vuitton lunettes ray ban nba East, polo lacoste, each containing the word ON, and together they outline a holiday tree. It?s all in celebration of that ?Annual Manhattan event,? Remarkably, jordan pas cher, one entry near the bottom has three rebus squares. The full name of that RB group with the 1990 hit is Tony, air jordan! Toni, prada borse! Ton?!

There are several notable clues. At 22 Across, ralph lauren femme, ?Are we not joking about that yet?? perfectly captures TOO SOON. ?Creatures known to lick their own eyeballs? are GECKOS. That?s a cool word even without a great clue.

Do you still fall for clues like ?Capital of Iceland? or are you onto those by now? They always cause people trouble, polo lacoste, and this one is particularly nefarious. ?Capital? is such a versatile word. Possible answers include both REYKJAVIK and KRONA,air jordan femme, but they?re both wrong today. The capital letter in the word Iceland is a LONG I.

Improbable science that makes you laugh - thoughtfully

Lisa Grossman, reporter
PA-11737525.jpgMarc Abrahams at the 21st annual Ig Nobel awards ceremony at Harvard University in 2011 (Image: Michael Dwyer/AP/Press Association Images)

Marc Abrahams is an evangelist for science with a sense of humor. Founder of The Annals of Improbable Research and the accompanying Ig Nobel prizes, his new book is called This is Improbable: Cheese string theory, magnetic chickens, and other WTF research. He has spent the last 23 years looking for research that makes people laugh - and then makes them think.

This is Improbable is your fourth book, if I'm counting correctly. Why write it now?

Too much material. It comes largely from some of the stuff I've been writing in the newspaper column [in The Guardian] over the past nine years. Some are things I've learned about from some of the Ig Nobel winners. Some of the winners have really become part of the family. From them and from other people, every day there's a big flow of information and commentary. I'm always looking for stuff and trawling around, but some days the flow becomes, I say this cheerfully, almost overwhelming in volume.

How did you get into this business in the first place?

I used to be doing software stuff. I started a software company. But I've always done stuff a little bit like this, even when I was a little kid.

This chunk of my career, life, whatever, started when I wondered whether some of this stuff that I'd been writing, whether I might get it published somewhere. I sent a little pile of it off to a magazine [The Journal of Irreproducible Results]. I got a phone call from somebody saying, I got your articles, and I was wondering if you'd like to be the editor of the journal.

You'd sent them in blind?

I hadn't even seen a copy of the magazine. It was an old magazine. It turned out to have a long, really tangled, crazy history. It started with a couple of scientists in Israel in the 1950s. But by the time I got to it, it was in such bad shape that anybody could improve it.

So I found the original guys, a couple more, and we started the Ig Nobel ceremonies. All kinds of good things started happening.

Then the company publishing it got a new president who decided he wanted to kill off a lot of their publications. So after a few years, rather than watching the thing disappear, I invited everyone who'd ever been involved to start a new thing, with a new name. And the guy who came up with the name of the original, I made sure he got to name the new one.

In the early days, how did you find the studies you covered?

There was still a bunch of people who knew of the previous journal. There was a gang of people who had been doing this stuff and had no place to send it. As time went on it became easier and easier. There's so much stuff out there. So much stuff. And some of it has this quality we look for: it makes you laugh, and then makes you think. It sticks in your head. And a week later it's all you want to talk about.

How do you choose the research that features in The Annals of Improbable Research?

With great difficulty. I could live off the pile I have now for 10 or 20 years. But it also means that as time goes on I get to be choosier and choosier.

The Ig Nobel prizes at this point have 9000 new nominations per year, and 10 winners. And pretty consistently, 10 to 20 per cent is people nominating their own stuff. Those almost never win. The funny thing about the Ig Nobel prize is that quality is almost always a side effect. It's difficult to hit that quality if that's the main thing you're trying to do. Often there's something that strikes you as amusing, and it is. But when you go and talk to the person who did it, you realise that this conversation you're having is the first time they've realised they did something funny.

Can you give me an example of that?

The physics prize one year went to a group of scientists in Australia. They had published a paper titled: "An analysis of the forces required to drag sheep across various surfaces."

[Laughs]

Almost everyone in the world reacts exactly like you did. But these people, it's just what they were doing. They live in a part of Australia where sheep was a major industry. The people who work with sheep have to bring thousands of them through a big building to shear them. It's a complicated and dangerous process, the sheep often don't want to move where you want them to when you want them to. There were a lot of injuries to the people who use the equipment, as well as the sheep.

The managers were always looking for ways to make it happen more smoothly and less dangerously. So they called in these scientists and asked, is there anything you can do? The scientists went to work, and this was their report.

But the moment it was pointed out, they immediately thought it was funny.

Now that the Igs are 20 or so years old, they're kind of venerable and respected. How does that make you feel?

I hope it's not too well respected. I wish it were better known. If you were to go out on the street, probably even right here in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and asked the first person you met if they know what the Ig Nobel prize is, most people don't know.

In the last few years I've really come to believe that if this were happening in another country, it would be better known. There's always so much more interest in England and in other countries than here.

Someone I was on a panel with about a year ago put into words what's different about how science is treated in the US: science here is earnest. It's important, and deeply serious. It's not funny. That's just not the main way of looking at it here. But it is in other places.

I think it gets at this main word - "improbable". What you're really saying is, it's not what you're expecting. If something is truly, utterly unexpected to you, your first reaction is to laugh. Even something tragic. But once you know about it, it's not funny anymore. That's what was happening with the sheep dragging. That happens with every scientist, and with everybody.

That's a lot of what I do: take the stuff that to most people is not worth looking at, but if you look from a different angle and give it a little time, it makes it really unexpected and interesting.
