LONDON (AP) - U.S. forward Clint Dempsey sat in the stands as countryman Brad Friedel produced a superb display in goal, leaving Tottenham tied 1-1 with Norwich in the Premier League on Saturday.

Dempsey joined Spurs from Fulham late on Friday but wasn't registered in time to make his debut this weekend. They could have used with his goal threat.

Another new signing, Mousa Dembele, put Tottenham ahead in the 68th minute with a fine debut goal before Robert Snodgrass tied it for Norwich with 5 minutes to go.

New manager Andre Villas-Boas was hoping to repair his reputation at White Hart Lane after being fired by Chelsea after just eight months last season, but Spurs have just two points from three matches.

Tottenham finished the game with 10 men after substitute Tom Huddlestone's harsh late sending-off for a tackle on Jonny Howson and the team was booed off by the home fans.

"I understand why the fans are frustrated," Villas-Boas said. "No one wants to draw two games at home like that, but we will replay their faith. It is only our third game, so it may take some patience."

It could have been worse for Tottenham, with the 41-year-old Friedel defying Norwich with a series of saves in both halves.

Manchester City beat Queens Park Rangers 3-1 thanks to goals by Yaya Toure, Edin Dzeko and Carlos Tevez tied at seven points with Swansea and West Bromwich Albion after three games.

Chelsea is the leader on nine points but didn't play this weekend. In European Super Cup action Friday, it lost 4-1 to Atletico Madrid in a match between the winners of last season's Champions League and Europa League.

Swansea missed the chance to climb to the summit above Chelsea on goal difference by drawing 2-2 with Sunderland, needing Michu's fourth goal of the season to salvage a point.

West Bromwich Albion beat Everton 2-0 to go third, while West Ham eased past Fulham 3-0 following an encouraging but scoreless debut from Andy Carroll after his loan move from Liverpool. Wigan drew 2-2 with Stoke.

ROME (AP) - Torino had a strong home opener on its return to Serie A after three seasons in the second division, beating 10-man Pescara 3-0 in a meeting of two promoted clubs

After Torino's Rolando Bianchi had a penalty saved, Alessandro Sgrigna put the hosts in front on his Serie A debut in the 34th minute following a setup from Bianchi. Matteo Brighi added another in the 59th and Bianchi - who has been with Torino since they last played in the top division - finally found the net in the 63rd.

Pescara defender Christian Terlizzi was sent off for taking down Bianchi inside the area, leading to the penalty.

Torino has three points from two games, having begun the season with a one-point penalty from a betting scandal. Serie B champion Pescara, back in the top division after 19 years, remains without a point, having also lost 3-0 to Inter Milan in its opener.

Later Saturday, AC Milan was at Bologna aiming to rebound from its home loss to Sampdoria in its opener.

Aaron Hunt missed a penalty in the first half for Bremen, but scored another early in the second and then set up Nils Petersen's first goal for the side following his loan move from Bayern Munich.

"It was an outstanding game from us," Werder coach Thomas Schaaf said. "The players never let up."

Elsewhere, American midfielder Jermaine Jones scored Schalke's second goal in a 3-1 win over Augsburg, Bayer Leverkusen won 2-0 against Freiburg, and promoted Eintracht Frankfurt won 4-0 at Hoffenheim, which finished the game with nine players.

Fortuna Duesseldorf was to host Borussia Moenchengladbach in Saturday's second derby later.

PARIS (AP) - Lyon rallied from a goal down to beat Valenciennes 3-2 on Saturday and move provisionally top of the French league.

Brazilian defender Gil headed in Gael Danic's corner in the 12th minute, but Lyon winger Michel Bastos leveled the scores shortly after and striker Bafetimbi Gomis' penalty put the home side ahead midway through the first half.

Midfielder Clement Grenier looked to have made the game safe in the 66th with a fierce shot from just inside the penalty area. But Valenciennes forward Gregory Pujol pulled a goal back 10 minutes later to set up a nervy finish at Stade Gerland.

Unbeaten Lyon has 10 points from four matches, but Marseille can restore its two-point lead by beating Rennes on Sunday.
