Sensible Tips for Arranging Home Remodeling Tasks | Home ...

One from the options which you will face when preparing for the home remodeling tasks is whether or not or to not use laminate flooring or wood flooring. Each include heat for your home, each feel and look lush, but every choice brings with it some benefits and drawbacks. When you arrange which tasks to complete and the way to spending budget your cash, attempt making a chart of what?s essential for you.

With wood floors there?s an instantaneous opulence. All the fantastic and historic houses had and also have wood floors. Discovering a home with authentic wood floors is like discovering a buried gem.

Wood flooring can also be a advantage to our atmosphere. Using the price of a lot of utilities growing one method of maintaining your heating expenses reduced would be to possess the additional insulation that strong wood floors would deliver. Planks can also be accessible from recycled wood from both remodeled historic landmarks or schools.

The price of wood floors is decidedly substantial. Twenty-four planks can operate from as little as ninety-three bucks to as substantial as 5 hundred bucks. The set up is expensive also. Strong difficult wood floors need experts with distinctive equipment to complete the set up for you personally. Much more expenses are incurred whenever you consider dealing with and staining the wood. There?s also the price of time factored in with this particular additional labor. A standard front room can price around 20 5 bucks for each sq. ft. That doesn?t consist of all the extras that will make the ultimate invoice include up (such as the price of shifting furniture and getting rid of carpet).

Laminate flooring, whilst much less extraordinary, is significantly cheaper. Bulk planks may be bought from as little as thirty bucks to as substantial as eighty. This price generally consists of delivery and as there?s no have to deal with laminate wood, there?s no additional price for staining and remedies.

Whilst you are able to effortlessly employ an expert to put in your laminate flooring, the beauty of it?s which you need not. A pro might have you prepared to go inside a day, but because the set up is comparatively easy, so are you able to.

Laminate flooring is fairly new towards the market within the Usa. Lengthy around the scene in Europe (because the seventies) most customers are shocked to find out that there?s this kind of a factor as wood laminate floors. Point out the phrase, ?pergo?, after which it is sensible.

The laminate floor is comprised of 3 ranges. Initial there?s the surface area degree, adopted from the core and at last the backing. The surface area degree is produced up of durable aluminum oxide and also the wood pattern is generally a top quality photograph. The core differs from producer to producer, however it is most frequently high-density fiberboard. The backing will differ based on what kind of set up you?re performing. Some need just get in touch with to get in touch with so as to stick, but in places exactly where moisture is really a problem heat may be utilized to make a more powerful bond.

PFT: How to reconcile Tebow's stances?

Tim TebowAP

Tim Tebow is capable of throwing an accurate ball. ?He?s just not capable of doing so consistently.

But he says he?s not bothered by criticism of his throwing ability.

?First of all it is not my place to try and debate and make myself look good,? Tebow told ESPN New York?s Stephen A. Smith and Ryan Ruoco, via SportsRadioInterviews.com, after Smith told Tebow that Smith doesn?t have confidence in the way Tebow throws. ??That?s not my place at all. ?I appreciate you complementing?me saying that I have an impact and that I can win football games. ?I really appreciate that and just as far as getting better throwing I?ve been working extremely hard on that.?

That?s classic Tebow, turning the backhand into a bouquet. ?And then, after saying it?s not his place to make himself look good, he tries to make himself look good.

?I feel like in my career I?ve done some good things. ?I think second in the history of college football as far as my rating. . . . ?did pretty well,? Tebow said. ??Definitely some things I am working on as far as mechanic-wise to get better in the NFL and improve. ?You can see that in certain situations I?ve done that. ?In certain situations I have tried to be very careful with the ball and not have a lot of turnovers and so there are some situations where I probably should have forced some more balls in there. ?There are some situations where I feel like I have done some good things. I am just going to continue to get better, but I appreciate the complements and the rest I use as motivation.?

Tebow also addressed the fine line he?s walking between supporting starter Mark Sanchez and ?absolutely? competing with Sanchez. ?Smith say it?s a contradiction. ?(And we agree with Smith.)

?I disagree with you that it?s contradicting yourself,? Tebow said. ??I think there are things that are more important than football games. ?Your relationship, how you treat people, and relationships in general, that?s more important to me than football games. ?We spend a lot of time, we?re passionate about it, but ultimately football is not the most important thing, but as far as rooting someone on, supporting them? ?You can do that with still trying to go out there and do your best. ?And if your best is better, than so be it. ?If it?s not then you have to do the other roles you are asked to do. ?I don?t think you have to have an attitude where you have to say, ?I don?t want someone to do their best.? ?Absolutely not. ?I want them to do their best. ?I just want to do my best and continue to develop to the best that I can be and if that?s good enough to go out there and be a starting quarterback then that?s great. ?If it?s not I am going to ask whatever role I am asked to do.?

Tebow doesn?t know what role(s) he?ll be asked to do. ??I gotta be 100 percent honest. ?You know, I?m not sure,? Tebow said. ??I think for me it?s whatever I?m asked to do, I do it with all my heart. ?I try to do a great job at it. ?We?re in day four, so just continuing to learn. ?We?re continuing to learn the coaches, they?re learning us, learning the offense, learning installs. ?So it?s so early in the process that I have to say I can?t give you a straight answer on that.?

He can honestly say he?s not sure about his role(s) because he?s honest in his ambition to become the starting quarterback. ?If he?s not the starter, then he?ll be the Wildcat quarterback and the personal punt protector and a member of the kickoff team and a member of the kick return team and maybe a fullback/H-back/right tackle.

But Tebow wants to be the starter. ?And that will serve only to fuel the media and the fans who want to see Tebow play if Sanchez struggles.

And that?s why the Jets would be better off if Tebow were to stand up and say that he fully supports Mark Sanchez, that Tebow accepts the team?s repeated statements that Sanchez is the starter, and that Tebow will do whatever he is asked to do as the backup quarterback and whatever else the team asks him to do.

But Tebow is less likely to do that than he is to run wind sprints in the rain with his shirt on.

Build.com expands into flooring with launch of FloorMall.com ...

Home ? TechNews ? Build.com expands into flooring with launch of FloorMall.com

Chico, Ca (PRWEB) May 08, 2012

The brand that simplified shopping online for plumbing, lighting, door hardware and ventilation is expanding into flooring. The Build.com Network of Stores has added FloorMall.com to its lineup.

As the second-largest online home improvement store, Build.com has historically benefitted from a simplified shopping and buying process for its customers. And adding FloorMall.com to its Network of Stores represents its commitment to further understanding its customers unique needs.

This expansion into home flooring represents another step in creating a complete offering for all of the customers home improvement needs, said Brandon Proctor, Build.coms VP of Marketing.

With its vast selection of home flooring options (laminate flooring, hardwood flooring, bamboo flooring, cork flooring and other materials), FloorMall.com is following the template Build.com created as a one-stop shop for home improvement.

For its expansion into the flooring category, Build.com looked to its category manager of new business, Bob Trafton. Traftons previous new launch (Build.com in April 2010) was the companys most successful ever, and he embraced the idea that flooring can be one of the most important investments for an existing homeowner or someone looking to buy.

If you walk into a home youd like to purchase and you see horrible carpet or torn-up floors, the first thing that comes to mind is flooring, Trafton said. Its the first step in a real home renovation, and something you can build around. Flooring decides wall colors, fixtures, and style for many customers.

And by giving that customer use of various shopping tools, Build.com (through FloorMall.com) has once again simplified a complicated buying processthis time, for flooring. So, whether its laminate or bamboo hardwood flooring or ceramic tile flooring, the exact measurements and cost is clearly seen by the customer.

Hongkong Parents oppose - UNITY MEDIA NEWS Network

Thousands of stroller-pushing Hong Kong parents and activists protest a plan to introduce national education lessons, slamming it as a bid to brainwash children with Chinese propaganda.

Hong Kong: Thousands of Hong Kong parents marched in the streets on Sunday in protest against a school curriculum plan they said was an attempt to brainwash students by extolling the achievements of the Chinese Communist party.
The controversy is the latest backlash against perceived political influence from Beijing in the former British colony that returned to Chinese rule in 1997.
The furor focuses on a Hong Kong government-funded 34-page book titled ?The China Model? celebrating China?s single party Communist state as a unique political system under which its economy and society have flourished.

The book will form the basis of a national education curriculum for students aged six years and older in Hong Kong schools in the coming year.

?We don?t want our child to be fed this material, said P.S. Ho, who joined the protest along with his wife and four-year-old daughter.

?If the initiative continues without changes, maybe we will change schools later or immigrate to another country.?

Parents with children in strollers, secondary school students and activists joined the rally on a sweltering afternoon, carrying placards and handing out pamphlets decrying the education plan.
A police officer estimated the crowd to be about 19,000 which is considered sizeable by Hong Kong standards.

?Parents are concerned. We don?t want them to brainwash our children?s minds,? said Linda Wong, a member of a parent concern group and a mother of one.

While the booklet touches on some negative aspects of contemporary Chinese history including unfair land grabs by corrupt officials and a toxic milk powder scandal, it makes no mention of the June 4 crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing?s Tiananmen Square in 1989.

It also describes the US political system as having ?created social turbulence and is harmful to people?s livelihood.?

?This material is given to elementary school students. They don?t have the independent thinking capabilities to judge for themselves,? said Joseph Wong, 19, a member of a youth activist group.

Hong Kong officials rejected any plan to introduce Chinese-style propaganda, saying the ?China Model? booklet was only a guide.

?We definitely would not want to see any so-called brainwashing type of education from happening. If that indeed happens, which we do not believe will happen?we would be the first one to come out to condemn such a situation,? said Lee Chack-fan, chairman of a group tasked with drafting the guidelines for the national education scheme.

EU antitrust charge for Servier, Teva, others over generics

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - EU antitrust regulators charged French drugmaker Servier, Israel's Teva and four other firms on Monday with blocking the entry of generic perindopril medicine to market, its second major case against a key element of business in the pharmaceutical industry.

"At this stage, the (European) Commission takes the view that the patent settlement agreements concluded by Servier with Niche/Unichem, Matrix (today Mylan Laboratories Limited), Teva, Krka and Lupin, as well as Servier's acquisition of key competing technologies were aimed at delaying or preventing the market entry of cheap generic versions of perindopril, in violation of EU antitrust rules," the EU watchdog said in a statement.

AP's Steve Wade saw Bill Gates as he slipped into the table tennis venue to watch Ariel Hsing. "I'm wishing her good luck but she has a really great opponent," said Gates. "She's done very well to get this far."

He asked if Gates had ever won a point off Hsing. "Not legitimately. She beat me when she was 9, easily. She has been nice to me in social situations."

College football notebook: Ohio State?s Dunn charged with possession of marijuana (updated)

Eamon Queeney | Dispatch

Bri'onte Dunn (25) during Ohio State's spring game this past April

Monday July 30, 2012 10:14 AM

Alliance police confirmed this morning that Ohio State running back Bri?onte Dunn, a former standout at GlenOak (Canton) High School, was charged over the weekend with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, The Repository of Canton reported on its website.

The charges stem from a traffic stop at about 11 p.m. Saturday.

Police observed Dunn driving when he almost ran a blinking red light, traveled over the crosswalk and almost struck a patrol car, according to a police report.

Police stopped Dunn for the violation and he and his passenger were found to have a wooden pipe used for smoking marijuana, along with less than 200 grams of marijuana on the seat cushions and floor boards where he was seated, The Repository says. A small amount of marijuana was also found in the driver?s door pocket, according to the police report.

Dunn, 19, was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, not wearing a seat belt and a tail-light violation. All the charges are misdemeanors.

The traffic stop and resulting charges were first reported by CantonRep.com last night. Dunn was not arrested or booked into the jail, contrary to online reports from other media outlets.

M@h*(pOet)?ica

#StorySaturday is a Guest Blog weekend experiment in which we invite people to write about science in a different, unusual format ? fiction, science fiction, lablit, personal story, fable, fairy tale, poetry, or comic strip. We hope you like it.

=========================

Welcome to the first installment of my?M@h*(pOet)?ica Blog.? I chose its title to give fair warning of the kind of . . . unusual material it will be concerned with, to wit: poetry whose mathematical elements are as important as its verbal elements, as in the following:

It?s from a series of ten equations its author, Scott Helmes, calls ?Non-additive Postulations,? which first appeared in Ernest Robson and Jet Wimp?s anthology, Against Infinity (Primary Press, 1979).? Later I will attempt to show that it makes sense.? Sort of.? For now I leave it for those courageous enough to stick with me as something to reflect upon.? Suggested topics of reflection: how is it poetry?? How is it mathematics?? Why should anyone bother with it, regardless of what it is?

Now for something of mine?since I?m too self-infatuated to let any chance for self-promotion to get past me without my taking full advantage of it. It?s ?The Best Investigations,? an offshoot of my on-going series of long divisions of ?poetry.?? I would defend its presence on the grounds that, as an example of the level of my immersion in mathematical poetry as a poet, ?it should provide a good idea of my qualifications to write about such poetry (or lack thereof). ?It also should reveal the range of matter such poetry can contain, such as symbols from music, and stolen images from canonical painters like Paul Klee and photographs from the Hubble?to the despair of some in the academy, I fear. ?(Note how I get back at them in this poem, though!)

My next specimen of the kind of poems my blog will mostly be about is another long division of mine, ?Mathemaku No. 4A, Original Version?:

I generally use this, my very first long division poem, in lectures on mathematical poetry as what I hope is an easy-to-follow introduction to it.? My friend Betsy Franco was inspired by it to make a bunch of most excellent poems like it for children, with illustrations by Steven Salerno, such as the following:

These are from Betsy?s Mathematickles (Simon & Schuster, 2003).

Then there?s this, by Karl Kempton, the arithmetic of which could not be more simple (look for the arrow near the bottom), but the full poetic complexity of could not be greater:

To finish off my little survey, here are three more I hope will indicate the variety of the poetry this blog will treat.? The first is by Charlotte Baldridge, the second by Robert Stodola (both from Against Infinity), and the third by Kaz Maslanka:

Okay, now for a little more about me?about me and mathematical poetry, that is.? In elementary school I was early tabbed ?gifted,? meaning I was academically one in a hundred.? At the time, the population of the United States was only around 150,000,000, so that meant only a million-and-a-half others were as smart (according to the tests) as I.? But I did seem quicker to pick up arithmetic than my classmates, and even got enough interested in algebra in junior high to read ahead in my textbook?until other interests intervened.? When I got to high school, Sputnik had the country?s leaders worried about our technological lead, so those considered gifted, like I, were bombarded with propaganda about the value of a career in science.? Hence, I, and most of my friends, immediately opted for careers in the arts or humanities.

Alarmingly non-conformist, I went further, turning my back on college with the intention of becoming a self-taught Famous Writer, like Bernard Shaw, Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare.? I never made it.? Eventually, paid to go to college by the GI Bill and able to go free in California, where I?d been living long enough to qualify as a Californian, I broke my vow never to go to college.? I went full-time to Valley Junior College in the San Fernando Valley for five years, even after I?d used up my GI Bill aid.

I?d always enjoyed math, and had read a few books about it for layman, one of which got me trying to overturn Georg Cantor?s different-sized infinities; it took me several years to finally concede that I couldn?t.? (At one point I even wrote Isaac Asimov about it; he wrote a postcard back saying it wasn?t an area of expertise for him, so he could not deal with whatever ?refutation? of Cantor I sent him.)? I tried to disprove the non-Euclidean geometries, too, taking a long time to allow that I could not.? I won?t say anything about my adventures with modern physics?except that I came to be a passionate advocate of the value of all the sciences in spite of what the Sputnik hysteria did to me.

Meanwhile, I remained active as a creative writer, getting just about nowhere in all genres.? My work was quite conventional except for the haiku I wrote influenced by the typographic techniques of E. E. Cummings.? I got nothing published but some conventional haiku that I also wrote.? The haiku and Cummings.? Those two things were the key to my involvement with mathematical poetry.? The haiku because it is the kind of poetry that comes closest to mathematics.? I say that because it is supposed to be maximally objective, with a minimum of words, the best of them tending to be almost as condensed and elegant as an effective equation.

As for the poetry of Cummings, its visual elements, as in the famous one from his Tulip and Chimneys (1923), portraying Buffalo Bill,

BuffaloBill-Excerpt

Buffalo Bill

were the first important step in the evolution of poetry of words only to concrete poetry, which was the first variety of? what I call ?plurexpressive poetry? for poetry that is significantly aesthetically expressive in more than one expressive modality (or ?plurally expressive?), in this case the expressive language of words and the expressive language of graphics.? A half century or so later we had many such mixed kinds of poetry, including mathematical poetry . . . and visiomathematical poetry, which employs three expressive modalities, some examples of which I?ve shown here.

Next up, if enough are interested, my examinations of various mathematical poems, including the ones on display here, and my attempts to answer the questions I earlier suggested as topics of reflection.? Stay tuned.

Sunday Sound: Heard on 'This Week'

Below are some of the notable comments made Sunday on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." The Powerhouse Roundtable included Obama campaign senior adviser Robert Gibbs and Romney campaign senior adviser Kevin Madden , ABC News' George Will; Democratic strategist and ABC News contributor Donna Brazile; Yahoo! News Washington bureau chief David Chalian, radio host and Brietbart.com contributing editor Dana Loesch, Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus?and ABC News senior political correspondent Jonathan Karl.

Robert Gibbs

GIBBS: Look, Mitt Romney wondered aloud whether London was ready for the Olympics, and I think it's clear that voters in this country wonder aloud whether Mitt Romney is ready for the world, and I think the world is not yet ready for Mitt Romney. I think there's - literally to go overseas, stand in the country of our strongest ally, and on Olympics that they've been preparing for years for, and question whether or not they're ready does make you wonder whether or not he's ready to be commander-in-chief.

GIBBS: The president is the president of the United States. He understand where the buck stops. We also understand what we inherited and what we can't go back to, which are the tried-and-tested ideas of four years ago which got us into this mess. I mean, you heard - you heard the discussion about tax cuts. This week, the Senate rightly voted to ensure that when - at the end of the year, we extend tax cuts for middle-class families. But their economic theory is we get this economy going by giving millionaires and billionaires more and more tax cuts. That's not what's going to get this economy moving.

GIBBS: We spent the first month of the campaign, for four weeks, running nothing but a positive ad about what President Obama's done. But let's be clear. Mitt Romney had a strategy during the primaries. He used negative ads to destroy Rick Perry. He used negative ads to destroy Newt Gingrich. He used negative ads to destroy Rick Santorum. We're not going to let him play his tried-and-true role as prep school bully. We're going to certainly respond. And, look, the ad that you mentioned on what the president said selectively edited the sentence previous to what you heard the president say is talking about infrastructure and roads and bridges.

Kevin Madden

MADDEN: Well, I think this is an election, again, that the public is viewing around big things. I don't think that a gaffe or a YouTube moment is really going to make or break this particular election. I think it's going to be about the direction of the country, how we rebuild the economy, how we continue to have a stronger national security posture around the globe. I think that the headlines that - that come out of London on one day are not going to be as important as the overall view that people take when it comes to our economic prosperity here at home and then our safety and security around the globe. So I think the fact that the governor has given a - he gave a very strong, robust speech about his national security policy at the Veterans of - at the VFW before he left. And I think you're going to see some - some images that are coming out of Israel, with him standing strong with our allies there, some strong statements coming out of Israel, I think that's going to be much more important as a judgment on this particular trip than anything that happened

MADDEN: I think words matter and I think priorities matter. I think that's something that Governor Romney feels very strongly about, and I think that's one of the reasons why he's traveled - this is his fourth trip to Israel. That's the reason he's there now, to make sure that he sends a strong statement as a potential future president to the people of Israel, because the shared values that we have as far as national security and Israeli policy, our policy towards Israel, is sort of an American value, an American principle, of our shared values around freedom and democracy there. So I think that's really important, a message to send. I think that there are many folks up on Capitol Hill who've worked with this administration that believe that and wish that the president had been stronger, that he had moved quicker, that he had done so with a much more collaborative fashion up on Capitol Hill. So I think that that's another problem that the - that this president has had. But overall, I think that - that the president does - that Mitt Romney has sent a strong message to the folks of Israel that not only is he visiting there to send these messages now, but also that he would visit as president.

MADDEN: I think the public is reacting very negatively because the president, when he was a candidate in 2008, promised hope and change and he promised to challenge the status quo. And instead, he's been very much a conventional politician over the last three-and-a-half years. What Governor Romney has done during this campaign is focus like a laser on the issues and the anxieties that are really driving voter sentiment right now, which is the economy, and our inability to really - the inability of the president to get it back on track. And if you look at our ads and you look at the president's - or you look at Governor Romney's words on the campaign trail, they're all consistently focused on the economy. What he would do on day one as a president to help put the economy on track - back on track, whether it's making sure that we approve the Keystone pipeline so that we have more energy resources and we can help the economy. So we're focused like a laser on the economy.

Powerhouse Roundtable

George Will

WILL: It's a First Amendment issue that wouldn't last 10 seconds in court, to condition a government entitlement or privilege on the content of your political thought? Second, the head of Chick-fil-A is being excoriated by these people, by Rahm Emanuel, for example, for holding a view on marriage that the president held when he was elected in 2008. And let's note, the gay rights isn't driving this. The gay rights movement is far too sensible. These are pandering, third-rate politicians pandering to them.

Donna Brazile

BRAZILE: Well, look, I don't believe the president was wrong in saying something that has been said over and over again by so many, including Elizabeth Warren, who said it better, and it went viral. But, I mean, there's - we cannot change Republican spin or Republican narrative. What we can do is talk about what the president's doing to help small businesses compete, what the president is doing to help small businesses grow and hire people. That's what we can talk about. We're not anti-small business. We're trying to help small businesses compete.

BRAZILE: A weak economy hurts the incumbent. But on the other hand, we're not sitting around on our hands, you know, looking for things to get worse before, you know, we try to help people. Yes, the economy is tough for President Obama, but I do believe that he has a lot of credibility that he can out there and talk about the things that - the steps he's taken, the steps that he would like to take, and the steps that the Republicans will continue to oppose, because simply they've decided there's one mission in life, and that is to defeat Barack Obama. But, you know, back in 1980, when we had a Democratic president during hard times, Ronald Reagan had some credibility in going out there and talking to blue-collar voters, because he came from a union household, he was president of a union, he talked about his father getting laid off during Christmas. He had the narrative. Mitt Romney? He talks about firing people.

David Chalian

CHALIAN: Talking to both campaigns, they think it's going to remain close all the way through. In fact, they also think that it is a more limited universe of persuadable, truly swing voters than in recent presidential elections. Right now, this is a two- to four-point race, maybe the slightest edge to the president at the moment. Neither campaign believes the NBC-Wall Street Journal horserace number that shows it is a six-point race. They think that's too wide. I think what we've seen, now looking forward to the next 100 days, and what we've seen up to now, a lot of this campaign has been about the definition of Mitt Romney so far, and that's largely due to sort of a gamble, right, that the president's campaign team made by spending more money than they were bringing in - that's never an easy decision to do - to go heavy right now negatively on Romney, try to frame him, and muddle this - this one major credential that he has brought into the race of his business record. The Romney campaign has allowed that to happen to some degree, and I think what you heard from Kevin in that interview and what I think you're going to see going forward in the next 100 days, largely due to sort of the calendar and the events demand it. At the convention, they're going to start filling in a different story of Mitt Romney that right now the American people don't really have to discuss at the kitchen table.

CHALIAN: Well, I think - because of how tight this election is going to be, I think there's a recognition that whoever wins the presidency is probably going to win it by a more narrow margin than it was won the last time. The margins for the majority parties in both chambers are probably going to be more narrow after this. So I don't - I don't hear anyone on either side thinking that this election is going to somehow transform us and move us as a country to more - a better place with better discourse. It seems to me that we're going to be actually further into this rut after this election.

Dana Loesch

LOESCH: I think - we need to stop trying redefine gaffe, because it's not a gaffe when you go and repeat towards the British prime minister or the London mayor what's actually been in British headlines for the past several weeks. I mean, Piers Morgan even said, well, he told the truth. So what of it? London's mayor obviously does not see eye to eye with Romney on politics. He's not of that political ideology. I just think that this was a gotcha moment. I can't even believe that a big deal was made about this. If they're angry at Romney for repeating what the headlines are, then they should be angry at their own British press.

LOESCH: You know, I support - you know, I'm a Christian. I go to church on Sundays. I believe in traditional marriage, but I eat Oreos. I don't care that Oreo came out with a rainbow Oreo. Why didn't they do it sooner? Because it's like quadruple stuffed. I would have loved to have ate that. I order from Amazon. I use Apple computers, because I don't want to segregate an ideology and encourage mediocrity.

Ruth Marcus

MARCUS: I think that there's red flags on both sides. You could look at the red flag of what happened to the 2008 mandate and say, if you look at this lousy economy, the astonishing thing is that Mitt Romney is not further ahead of the president and that, instead, we're stuck in this dead-even race. So what do we know? Mitt Romney is not the most adroit candidate in the world. Barack Obama is suffering from a lousy economy that doesn't seem to be getting better any time soon enough to help him. And this is an election that, unlike 2008, is not going to be about hope and change. It's going to be about fear and loathing.

Jonathan Karl

KARL: I believe that most people looking at this have been underestimating the chance that Paul Ryan could be the pick. You know, the Ryan budget will be attacked immediately by Democrats, of course, but the attitude up in Boston - and I am told within Romney's inner circle - is they believe that they're going to get attacked for that anyway and that Paul Ryan is the person who could best fight against those attacks. Romney really likes Ryan. I think there's a good chance he's the pick.

The seat of meta-consciousness in the brain

Friday, July 27, 2012

Which areas of the brain help us to perceive our world in a self-reflective manner is difficult to measure. During wakefulness, we are always conscious of ourselves. In sleep, however, we are not. But there are people, known as lucid dreamers, who can become aware of dreaming during sleep. Studies employing magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) have now been able to demonstrate that a specific cortical network consisting of the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the frontopolar regions and the precuneus is activated when this lucid consciousness is attained. All of these regions are associated with self-reflective functions. This research into lucid dreaming gives the authors of the latest study insight into the neural basis of human consciousness.

The human capacity of self-perception, self-reflection and consciousness development are among the unsolved mysteries of neuroscience. Despite modern imaging techniques, it is still impossible to fully visualise what goes on in the brain when people move to consciousness from an unconscious state. The problem lies in the fact that it is difficult to watch our brain during this transitional change. Although this process is the same, every time a person awakens from sleep, the basic activity of our brain is usually greatly reduced during deep sleep. This makes it impossible to clearly delineate the specific brain activity underlying the regained self-perception and consciousness during the transition to wakefulness from the global changes in brain activity that takes place at the same time.

Scientists from the Max Planck Institutes of Psychiatry in Munich and for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig and from Charit? in Berlin have now studied people who are aware that they are dreaming while being in a dream state, and are also able to deliberately control their dreams. Those so-called lucid dreamers have access to their memories during lucid dreaming, can perform actions and are aware of themselves ? although remaining unmistakably in a dream state and not waking up. As author Martin Dresler explains, "In a normal dream, we have a very basal consciousness, we experience perceptions and emotions but we are not aware that we are only dreaming. It's only in a lucid dream that the dreamer gets a meta-insight into his or her state."

By comparing the activity of the brain during one of these lucid periods with the activity measured immediately before in a normal dream, the scientists were able to identify the characteristic brain activities of lucid awareness.

"The general basic activity of the brain is similar in a normal dream and in a lucid dream," says Michael Czisch, head of a research group at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry. "In a lucid state, however, the activity in certain areas of the cerebral cortex increases markedly within seconds. The involved areas of the cerebral cortex are the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, to which commonly the function of self-assessment is attributed, and the frontopolar regions, which are responsible for evaluating our own thoughts and feelings. The precuneus is also especially active, a part of the brain that has long been linked with self-perception." The findings confirm earlier studies and have made the neural networks of a conscious mental state visible for the first time.

India's new president: focus is on prosperity, not terrorism

Pranab Mukherjee's acceptance speech highlights how India sees its?sharpest threat as slower-than-expected economic growth, not Pakistan and its Islamic militant proxies.

By Ben Arnoldy,?Staff writer / July 25, 2012

India's new President Pranab Mukherjee, right, in a traditional horse driven carriage, waves to the media as he arrives at the Presidential Palace, in New Delhi, India, Wednesday, July 25.

Manish Swarup/AP

India?s new president, Pranab Mukherjee, took the oath of office and described his nation as so focused on achieving prosperity that it would not be distracted by ?noxious practitioners of terror? and, by unstated extension, the long-running rivalry with Pakistan.

He described terrorism as a ?fourth world war? that followed the cold war, and said that India faced it long before many other nations understood its scope. Yet, President Mukherjee also appeared to be declaring victory and nudging India off a war footing, laying out peaceful prosperity as the challenge ahead and describing terrorism as a ?trap? for those who overreact.?

?Peace is the first ingredient of prosperity,? Mukherjee said in a speech before Parliament after ascending to the mostly ceremonial post. ?I am proud of the valor and conviction and steely determination of our armed forces as they have fought this [terrorism] menace on our borders; of our brave police forces as they have met the enemy within; and of our people, who have defeated the terrorist trap by remaining calm in the face of extraordinary provocation."

He added: "India is content with itself, and driven by the will to sit on the high table of prosperity. It will not be deflected in its mission by noxious practitioners of terror."?

The speech fits well with how India interprets its current place in the world: The longtime rivalry with Pakistan has essentially been won, with India pulling ahead in terms of economic development and global stature. And, in this view, the sharpest threat comes from the slower-than-expected economic growth of late, not Pakistan and its Islamic militant proxies.

With Pakistan slipping into pariah status internationally and making little economic headway, the country has by most objective measures been left behind by India. But whether Pakistan?s insecure military establishment will quietly accept that position and stay in peaceful dialogue with New Delhi remains an open question.

Mukherjee?s reference to ?extraordinary provocation? no doubt includes the 2008 Mumbai massacre, which India blames on Pakistan, with growing evidence to back it up. The Indian public has stoically avoided pressing political leaders to exact revenge, allowing New Delhi the chance to portray itself as the responsible player in South Asia by resuming peace talks and to further isolate Pakistan with intelligence dossiers on the attacks.

However, Pakistan still has cards to play in Afghanistan and Kashmir. As the US troop presence in Afghanistan draws down, Pakistani support for the Taliban could draw India into military support for the Afghan government. And while Pakistan has largely desisted in recent years from encouraging Islamic militants to infiltrate Indian-controlled Kashmir, that policy could change ? especially given festering Kashmiri frustration over the lack of any political settlement there.

Where's the accountability?

It?s in India?s handling of domestic uprisings in places like Kashmir where Mukherjee?s comments become far more patriotic than truthful.

?Violence is external to our nature; when, as human beings, we do err, we exorcise our sins with penitence and accountability,? he said.

Luke Rockhold to Throw Out First Pitch at Oakland A?s Game

You know you've made it as an athlete when a Major League Baseball team asks you to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at one of their games.? Such is the case with Strikeforce middleweight champ Luke Rockhold.? Two weeks ago, Rockhold was handling challenger Tim Kennedy in the cage; on Monday, he gets to drop by the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and put one across home plate (the A's are playing the Tampa Bay Rays, if that means anything to you).? Of course, this isn't the first time that an MMA fighter has been granted this honor.? Other examples include:

  • UFC light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones, who threw out the first pitch for a San Diego Padres game back in July, 2010.

?

  • Former UFC light-heavyweight champ Rashad Evans, who tossed one out for a Miami Marlins game in June of this year.

?

  • Former UFC middleweight champ Rich Franklin, who did the honors for a Cincinnati Reds game.

?

  • Former UFC welterweight star Chris Lytle, who threw one home for a Los Angeles Dodgers game.

?

  • Former WEC bantamweight champ Miguel Torres, who did one up for the Chicago White Sox.

?

  • Strikeforce fighter K.J. Noons, who rocketed one home for a Houston Astros game.

?

  • UFC light-heavyweight fighter Brandon Vera, who did the same for a Padres game earlier this month.

?

You know what.? Now that I think about it, this whole throwing-out-the-ceremonial-first-pitch thing isn't that special after all.? As you were.

About 19000 Idahoans to soon get high-speed Internet | Business ...

A new $5.7 million project will give high-speed, broadband Internet access to about 19,000 Idahoans in rural areas, the Federal Communications Commission said.

More than 41 percent of Idaho's rural population ? or about 194,000 people ? don't have access to high-speed Internet. Idaho has the nation's seventh-lowest rate of rural broadband availability, the FCC said in a release.

Frontier Communications Corp. and CenturyLink Inc. will use the $5.7 million to quickly deploy Internet access to unserved customers in 7,300 locations in Idaho, the FCC said. The companies must finish two-thirds of the project within two years and be finished in three years.

The Connect America project in Idaho is part of a national public-private partnership to provide access to 19 million rural Americans by 2020. The program's first phase will provide more than $100 million in public funding, matched by tens of millions of dollars in private funding for projects in 36 states, the FCC said.

Idaho's broadband availability is the worst in Camas, Clark and Teton counties, where the FCC found nobody has access to high-speed Internet.

Ada, Canyon, Gem and Minidoka counties have the highest per-capita access to high-speed Internet, the FCC said.

Video: Pennsylvania is 9th state to enact voter ID law

>>> they won a vote and a pennsylvania voter i.d. law could get in the way. democrats in montgomery county just northwest of federphiladelphia are holding an event tomorrow for anyone who needs an i.d. card .

>> good afternoon, richard, how are you?

>> very well, thank you. last night you had a packed forum in the area to help edge case those interested in understanding what the requirements are to register to vote and the voter i.d. requirements. how did that go?

>> well, we had 200 people there. fundamentally and unfortunately i think most of the people that were there were democrats. the republicans don't seem to be so worried about it. but the fact is that it went well except for the fact that it continued to cause -- the answers caused a tremendous amount of confusion. nobody really understands exactly what it is that they can and cannot present. people are scared in terms of -- i had94-year-old man come to me recently who was really upset. he had voted since he was 21 years old, 73 years. he didn't know what to do because he couldn't drive anymore, he didn't have a driver's license. it was troubling him tremendously just to go out and try to get a picture i.d. was becoming a problem for him.

>> what did you tell him?

>> i told him as it turned out we went -- i sat down with him, went through his wallet and found a picture i.d. he could utilize. but he had a tremendous amount of anxiety.

>> he didn't know that he actually had the proper i.d.

>> no. he lost his license two years ago because of his age.

>> i understand you have another event tomorrow.

>> i we do. we have a clinic in the western part of the county. we're teaching people how to go door knocking, getting mailers ready. the problem is we have to contact every single voter. a lot of voters who think they have the i.d. may not. it's not just the i.d. but the names on the voter i.d. card may be different than on their driver's license.

>> there is a logistical problem certainly that you're seeing at the moment. give as you sense here, you're on the ground there. the philadelphia city paper is saying up to 20% of pennsylvania voters could be disenfranchised as a result of these voter i.d. laws. that's on the higher end of what we've heard in the past and the number swells to 43% in philadelphia. what's your sense of how large of a problem this is?

>> look, this is a solution looking for a problem. it goes against the very essence of our democracy. it's immoral, it's unethical and it's wrong. in montgomery county , which is very affluent, we believe it will probably affect somewhere around 9% of the population in terms of of the registered voters or about 48,000. and some of those people will be able to figure it out and some won't and it's just an absolute mess. the governor when asked questions about what kind of i.d. should be -- was okay, couldn't answer the question himself. it's his legislation.

>> marcel, on the flip side the "new york times," nate silver , says that the voter i.d. law in pennsylvania could potentially swing the vote towards the gop by about 1.2%. are those other numbers not very accurate?

>> i'm not sure. clearly the legislation has only one purpose and that is to help the republicans and hurt the democrats. but what it does is it hurts senior, it hurts young people , people who don't drive. i think what is also done for us is it's really motivated our people. we will be knocking on every single door in this county. we are calling every single day going through with folks to understand and we're going to try to minimize that and hope that the courts do the root thing and declare this law unconstitutional, which is what it is. marcel groen, thank you for your time today.

>> thank you for having me.
